Lesson # ___3___
Date and Time of Lesson: 11/6/14 7:45-10:15 A.M.
Learning Objective: Students will be able to make a connection between numbers and the quantities that they
represent.
Alignment with Standards:
Common Core Math- K.CC.B.4: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to
cardinality.
Use of Formative
Assessment
(K.CC.B.4)
Accommodations: This is a lesson that is taught individually and at the students pace. Accommodations will
vary based on the needs of the student being taught at that time, since the lesson will be done one on one with
the teacher and student any modifications that that student may need will be addressed then.
Materials:
mat
spindle box
box of spindles
Procedures:
Motivation techniques- To gain the interest of the student, he will have to opportunity to work one on one with
the teacher during work time, as well as being shown a new lesson he has never seen before.
Grouping- This lesson will be taught on an individual basis to students, while other students work on other
Montessori shelf lessons during work time.
Instructional strategies- 1. Invite the child to work on a new lesson and show the student where the spindle box
lesson is located on the math shelf 3. Upon carrying the materials to the mat, the student will count along with the
teacher numbers 0-9 4. The teacher will demonstrate how to count a number and then count the number of
spindles that correlates 5. After watching the teacher, the student will count out spindles that correlate to the
correct number to and finish the activity for the remaining numbers.
Probing questions- Why does 0 not have any spindles in its box? What is this? (pointing at a certain number)
Show me __ (certain numbers)
Lesson closure- Once the student has completed placing the spindles in the number slots that they correspond
with, he will be shown how to clean the lesson up. Once this is done, the student will be given the ability to do
the lesson by himself if he chooses to do so.
Activity Analysis:
Activity 1- In this portion of the lesson the student will count through the numbers on the spindle box
while visually looking at the symbol that represents that number. This activity supports the lesson
objective because it allows the students to make the visual connection between the numbers and the
symbols that represent them, as well as prepare them for activity 2. This activity also stems from the
students need to practice making the visual connection between numbers and their symbols. It also
stems from the students need to have the opportunity to work one on one with a teacher. Technology is
not implemented during this activity because the student will be using the spindle box as a
manipulative.
Activity 2- After activity 1, the student will begin making the connection between numbers and
quantities by counting spindles and placing them in the number slot they correlate with. (i.e. count 1
spindle and place it in the slot labeled 1, etc.) This activity supports the lesson objective because the
student is visually making the connection between the quantity of objects to the number while hands on
manipulating the spindles to make the correlation. This activity stems from the students need to work
hands on, as well as visually to practice making the connection between numbers and the quantities that
represent them. This activity does not require the use of technology because the students will be
working hands on with the spindles and the spindle box making the connection between quantities and
numbers.
