I. Lesson Number, Grade Levels, Title, and Duration:

Lesson #1, 4th grade What Can We Explore, 50 minutes
II. Lesson Rationale:
I want students to learn that exploration can take place in many things. This is significant in helping
students understand what exploration can contain opening their definitions of exploration to pertain to
more subjects.
III. Key Concepts:
Exploring can take place anywhere and in anything.
IV. Essential Question:
What can we explore?
V. Lesson Objectives:
The students will be able to list three things to explore besides undiscovered areas.
Students will be able to draw three sketches related to what they listed.
VI. Specific Art Content:
Students will be taught make imagery based off their writing.
VII. Resources & Materials for Teacher:
Projector

VIII. Resources & Materials for Students:

Pencils (30)
Paper (30)
IX. Instruction and Its Sequencing:
Day of the Lesson (e.g., 1st day, 2nd day, etc.)
1. Introduction/Motivation: 5 minutes
Desk will be arranged by walls and students will come and sit on the floor. Teacher ask
students what they think exploration is. Teacher will toss stuffed animal and whoever catches it
will answer the question and then toss to another person who will answer the question.
2.GuidedPractice 15 minutes
Students will then watch explore Canada video (3 minutes) followed by teachers asking how
people in the film they are exploring Canada. Students will answer when catching stuffed
animal and then throw to another student for five answers. Answers will be written on the
board.
Students will then watch the explore science video followed by teacher asking students how
can we explore science or other subjects like history, math etc. Students will answer when
catching stuffed animal and then throw to another student for five answers. Answers will be
written on the board

Teacher will make a sketch on the board of one of the answers to show how to make imagery
connected the answers.
These videos and questions are meant to help open students minds to what they can explore and
to help them understand exploration doesnt just take place in new lands. The teacher sketch is
to help show students how to make imagery connect imagery to writing.
3. Independent Practice 25 minutes
Students will write down 3 ways they can explore that dont involve undiscovered places. They
will then have a corresponding sketch for each method of exploration (ex: Exploring new
foods would have a corresponding sketch of someone trying oysters for the first time).
Students can use the answers listed on the board.
4. Closure 5 minutes
Students will pair up and each will read their answers and drawings to their partners. This will
help solidify the idea of what people can explore.
5. Formative Evaluation
Students will be able to list three things they can explore (cannot be undiscovered places).
Students will draw three sketches related to what they listed.
I will help students individually that need reteaching during the independent practice and they
can finish the assignment as homework.
6. Classroom Management Procedures
What will I do to keep students on task and safe?
Teacher will explain the rules of catching and throwing the stuffed animal. (Only move
arms to catch, no getting up, if more than one person catches then they will all answer the
question, no throwing to hurt people.)
Students will be warned for breaking rules the first time, second time =small talk with
teacher, third time = write up
Teacher will walk around to answer questions and keep students on task.
Materials will be placed on a center table for easy access
