Sales Manager
When someone has the title of a manager, he has responsibilities in order to keep the
organization moving forward, and keep his staff focused. In the business field, a sales manager
plays a key role in achieving sales target and determines the success or failure in an organization.
Sales manager must understand his role by helping his team with motivation, counselling, and
knowledge development. (Roles and Responsibilities of a Sales Manager) Motivating the sale
team is important because you are the leading quarterback of your team. Your team needs
direction and a leader who inspires for success. On the other hand, counselling is also important
because you are able to teach your team by being their mentor and guide. Developing your team
is vital in order to have responsible individuals in a day to day workforce. The sales of an
organization however, are depended solely on the sales manager and the ability to work with his
staff. Also, a sales manager sets objectives and goals for the organization with his staff members.
Goals may include: a target of profit each month, or individual goals. Such as getting to know
your sales team. In order to put an effective sales plan, a sales manager needs to analyze market
trends and financial statements. (How to Become a Sales Manager) His biggest responsibility
though, is to complete these goals in order to drive profit in the right direction.
Other responsibilities a sales manager has includes: managing the sales administration
function, operational reporting performance, streamlining processes and systems wherever
possible, and advising senior management on maximizing business relationships.(Sales
Manager) The success of the organization depends on the sales manager if, he makes adequate

decisions on a day to day process. More responsibilities include promoting, expense control
meeting agreed targets, and monitoring the performance of a sales team. (Sales Manager) In
order to keep balance of an organization a sales manager needs to be able to have solid control
over all of his staff members. This includes having close relationships with them in order to have
a connected atmosphere. High standards are essential in having a connected atmosphere because
each member understands their role in reaching their objectives. Sales managers are the head of
the entire organization; hes an example team members look up to, a provider for sales, and
contributes the ability to set and complete quality goals.
In order to become a manager in general, one needs training and motivation with an
entry-level position. Training in sales is critical in becoming a sales manager. Employers expect
to see a commitment to a professional development. (How to Become a Sales Manager) Which is
the reason sales training is an asset to anyone wanting a role in sales management. Education and
experience are considered by most employers. At least five years of sales experience is desirable
for sales manager. (How to Become a Sales Manager) During those five years it is important that
you work to your potential in able to rank up. At first, one starts as a sales representatives and
learns from their own sales manager until eventually becoming one themselves. Its like climbing
a ladder; its a working process. Many companies would rather hire applicants who achieved a
bachelors degree in business, marketing, advertising and other similar fields. (How to Become a
Sales Manager) Masters degree makes your resume look even better, but not necessarily
required to be a sales manager. (How to Become a Sales Manager) Educational requirements are
less strict for job candidates who have more experience as a sales representative. (Sales
Managers, Career, Salary and Education Information) Education illustrates your perseverance to
show youre committed in achieving quality in your chosen career. Sales managers earn a decent

amount of salary each year. According to BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) sales managers earn
$59.21 in mean hourly wage, and $123,150 in mean annual wage. (United States. Department of
Labor) On top of the wages 359,300 are currently employed. (United States. Department of
Labor) Sales managers make living working full time hours for a whole week as their salary is
honorable.
A future for this job is definitely desirable; especially for those who have a history in
being a sales representative. Sales representatives are everywhere in our world of business.
However, there are few that are chosen to become a sales manager. People need specific
attributes that would help them leap over their competition and become their manager. First off,
a leader and an example is an important attribute in becoming an overall manager. For example,
by knowing the material and being a master of change. Todays business is unpredictable
breakout of financial, economic and technological innovations. (Gschwandtner) A sales manager
prepares his sales team to constantly change in the marketplace by communicating and listening
to decision making. Sales manager needs to calmly face challenges and chaos in order to lead his
team correctly. (Gschwandtner) Along with experience, gaining trust is a critical attribute sales
manager needs in order to be successful. Trust is the base for any relationship. In dealing with
business, trust relates to loyalty in order to be strong as a team. Lastly, a sales manager needs to
be motivated in order to succeed. Having a positive attitude and passion, play key roles in
motivation. In able to lead a team the sales manager encourages, and inspires members to
achieve their objectives. Therefore sales managers exceed in the workforce with distinctive
attributes that makes their job optimistic for employers.
One of the most successful sales managers of all time is Napoleon Barragan. Napoleon
founded 1-800 mattress as he opened new ideas of using technology to open new sales channels.

He was one of the first and successful supporters of the 1-800 numbers. He was positive that by
applying 1-800, customers would be willing to have mattresses delivered to their home unseen.
(10 Greatest Salespeople of All Time) He also developed online sales with matress.com when
other retailers were barely thinking of the web. Napoleon was successful because he was
motivated to create a new chain of sales using technology. He was ready for change because
shopping online was not common in the U.S during the 1970s. His success provided ideas to
many other businesses as they also opened online organizations hoping for the same positive
result. Technology in the workforce is constantly changing. Sales managers should be able to
recognize and take a step forward with providing sources like technology to drive sales forward.
Napoleon is a pioneer with applying technology to sales as his idea was able to drive profit from
other organizations toward the right direction; upward.
Being a sales manager does contain cons, but pros in this job overcome the cons in every
aspect. Staring off with pros sales managers has the potential to earn plenty of money in their
salaries. Start-up companies looking to enter the market attract many sales professionals by
offering higher than average salaries. (Why a Career in Sales: Pros and Cons) Also, in able to
share the success of the business it adds stock options. On the other hand, with high income you
are responsible and accountable to perform your goals and complete your numbers. This can
become stressful because you are expected to perform at a high quality compared to your
income. Another pro in being a sales manager is unlimited entrepreneurship. With unlimited
entrepreneurship a sales manager can be creative in managing his own business with financial
support from an organization. (Why a Career in Sales: Pros and Cons) Successful salary rises and
youre recognized for your achievements. When running your own business you will have a
higher level of accomplishment because you are directly the person responsible for generating

revenue. However, the cons of having unlimited entrepreneurship means that you are responsible
and accountable for the failure of your business. Youre accountable for the efforts and
performance of running your own business. With all of these responsibilities it can become
stressful because you have the weight for success on your shoulders. As long as a sales manager
is doing their job well, he shouldnt have to worry about the cons but instead enjoy the pros.
To conclude, I am a motivator who seeks for a challenge in the marketplace. Ive been
working in sales for about three years now. Ill be well suited for this job because of future
experience, and being able to perform. I work well with a team as Im not afraid to take the lead
and provide others with being an example. I look for the best solution to problems as Im not
afraid to make decisions, and take risks. Im a great listener, and always provide a positive
attitude. I give my very best effort as Im motivated for success. Im looking forward in
becoming a sales manager as I believe Ill be well suited for this job.
