Introduction
Anticipatory Set
Students will pass out recorders. I will tell them to take
the recorder out of the case and place the case under
their seats.
I will model incorrect playing position and the students
will have to fix my playing position. I will also perform
some notes on the recorder and students will have to tell
me what Im doing wrong. Then they will recall what is
important for good recorder playing.

Lesson Sequence
We will begin by playing Hot Cross Buns. I will review
important things to remember in the music. I will point
to the notes and students will play.
Next we will move on to Mary Had A Little Lamb. I will
review important things to remember in the music. I will
point to the notes and students will play. If there is
trouble spots, I will have the class say the note names
and then play it again.
We will then move on to Gently Sleep. Students will
discuss the important things to remember in the piece.
We will say the note names together as a class. We will
then play the piece together as a class, I will point to the
notes and say the note names. We will discuss what they
think as a class they could do to make it better the next
time they play that piece. Play the piece one more time
to fix the problems we talked about. The last time we
play, the students will play the piece without me saying
the note names.
After this, I will introduce a new piece of music titled
Recorder Rap. In this piece, there are quarter rests. I
will ask students if they know what the quarter rest
symbol means. We will discuss that this is a beat of
silence where they do not play. We will then say the note
names together as a class and say rest where there is a
rest. I will model the playing of the first two measures. I
will discuss that when they play the notes, they will
remove the recorder from their mouth and say rest
when there is a rest in the music. They will then play the
first two measures while I point to the notes and say the
note names. Then we will try to play the whole song
while I point to the notes and say the note names.
(If extra time is needed): We will then move on to Au
Clair de la Lune. We will discuss the French
pronunciation and the English translation. The students
will talk about important things to remember while
playing this piece. We will then say the note names
together as a class. And if time we will play through the
piece while I point to the notes and say the note names.
Students will then put recorders in their cases and put
them under the chairs. While they are doing this, they
will echo about quarter, half, and whole notes. We will
clap the Rockin Rhythm Raps rhythms (without the CD)
and then clap them with the CD.
The student collector will stand at the door with the
recorder box and while students are walking out to the
hallway they will place their recorders in the box.
