IntroductiontoLesson

HeyclasswehavebeenworkingfortwoclassesnowonthebattleofGettysburganddoingagreatjob.Wehave
learnedhowthisbattlewastheturningpointofthecivilwarandhowAmericawaschangedafterthisbattle.Wehave

alsolearnedthisdidnotendthecivilwar,butwasahugereasonwhytheUnionwonthewar.Todaywewillbetaking
alltheinformationwehavelearnedthroughreasearchandtheunitpacketandmakingastudyguide.Wewillalsobe
divingdeeperintoLincolnandtheGettysburgAddress.

out.IwillhavemysmartboardonforthemtofollowalongwithmeafterIgivetheminstructionsanddirectthemto.I
willshowthemsomeexamplesoftimelinesandtellthemhowtheyareusedandcreated.Iwillinformthemhowthey
needtobuildtheretimelineaccordinglysothattheycanuseitforastudyguide.Iwilltellthemthatiftheyareusingthe
chromebooksinappropatilytheywillbedeductedpointsofftheirassignments.Iwillalsoinstructthemthatwhenthere
timelinemeetstheguidelinesofthehandouttheyhavebeengiven,theycanreadovertheGettysburgaddressinthe
backoftherepacket.

Withtherechromebookstheywillfollowalongwithmebywatchingthesmartboardandworkingonthecomputersas
well.Iwillguidethemstepbysteponhowtocreateafreeaccountonwww.timetoast.com.FromthereIwillshowthem
howtosafelynavigatethesiteandhowtoviewthesampletimelines.Theywillbeabletoevenviewsometimelineson
Gettysburg,butthere'swillbeinmoredepth.Afterthestudentshavecreatedanaccount,andhaveviewedsample
timelinestheywillbeabletotakeideasfromtherenotes,Gettysburgpacket,andanyresearchtheyhavefoundtobuild
theirtimeline.Theycangooglesearchanyinformation,butmustinformmetheyintendtouseitsoIcanapproveit.After
theyfinishthetimelineanditmeetsthehandout'sguidelines,IwillhavethemreadtheGettysburgAddressintheback
oftheirpacket.WhiletheclassisreadingIwillhaveasmallgrouptoworkonthereadingtogetherwithme,theywill
alsobeabletolistentosimilarreadingsontimetoast.Wheneveryoneisfinished,wewillrereadthegettysburgaddress
againanddiscussit.

IndependentPractice

Thestudentswillbuildtheirtimelinetomeetthehandoutscriteriaandprovidethemwithainformativestudyguidethat
theycanuseonthesummativeexam.Whenthetimelineiscompletedtheywilldoashortindependentreadingofthe
GettysburgAddress.AftereveryonehascompletedtheirassignmentswewillreadtheGettysburgAddressagainasa
class.Andtheywilllearntherehomeworkassignmentfromthere.

Ihaveapassionforhistory,ithasalwaysbeenoneofmyfavoritesubjects.Thetwoteachersthatinfluencedmethe
mostinmypastasastudentwheresocialstudiesteachers.Ihopestudentsgetaideafromthislessonnotjustwhat
Gettysburgwasabout,buttheCivilWaringeneral.AlsothatthestudentswillseewhatinfluenceLincolnhadonthe
UnitedStatesandthiswar.ThesignificancethatGettysburgandtheAddressheldduringthewarandforthecountry.I
wantthestudentstoappreciatethetechnologythatisavailabletothemandhowtheycanusethoseresourcestohelp
themsucceed.Ireallyenjoytimelines,itisaneasywaytostudyandlearn,makingthesewithtechnologyoffersmore
optionsandamoreenjoyablestylethandrawingthemandlabelingthem.Fromthislessonthestudentswillhavea
betterunderstandingthatIamtryingmybesttogivethemstrategiesthatmakeslearningeasierandmoreenjoyablefor
themaswell.
