Consumer Product Research and Advertisement

Purpose and Goal: To investigate the ingredients in a common
household cleaning product, manufactured food product or
cosmetic product. Your goal is to find as much information about
the ingredients in your product as possible, then make an
advertisement for or against the product. Make it clear in the
picture why you think this product is good or bad.
Directions:
1. Find a household product with an ingredients label. Remove
the label or copy the label and bring it in to class. Try and pick a
label that has many ingredients (at least 8) and is not a vegetable,
fruit or simple animal product since these will not contain many
chemical compounds or have an ingredient label.
2. Research the products according to the guided questions.
Specifically research one chemical substance in-depth. Attach
Bibliography to back of poster or hand in with project. MUST BE
IN MLA FORMAT for full credit!! 3 non-internet sources
minimum, 5 total sources minimum. Use the laptops for this.
3. Type up answers to guided questions. Include Your Name,
Product Name, Date and period. Hand in with poster/project.
4. Create a advertisement for this product and include
information about 3-5 of the ingredients used in the product.
You may create a TV commercial, a radio advertisement or a
billboard advertisement. Make it informative about the
ingredients listed.
5. Present your product advertisement along with your findings
to the class.

Guided Questions:
1. List all ingredients with ate, -ite, -ide, and -ous endings along
with all ingredients containing per and hypo prefixes. What to
these prefixes and endings indicate about the ingredient?
2. List any ingredient with prefixes such as mono, di, tri, tetra,
penta, hepta, octa What do these prefixes indicate about the
chemical substance?
3. Find the formulas of 4 different ingredients and list them.
4. Identify one compound/ingredient that you are not familiar
with (may be one of the ingredients listed in #3). Do not choose
a common substance!
a. Find a structure or a partial structure of the chemical
substance.
b. Research the uses for this chemical substance. What is
the ingredient purpose in this product? What other products is
this chemical substance used in?
c. Are there any hazards, allergies, chemical reactions or
waste disposal issues related to this substance?
5. Are the ingredients listed in any particular order? If yes, how
are they listed?
6. What is the difference between an active and inactive
ingredient? Does your compound contain any active ingredients?
If it does, what is it? What are the purposes for the inactive
ingredient in the product?
7. Define the term preservative. Are there any preservatives or
dyes used in your product? If there are, identify which
ingredients are used as preservatives and which are dyes.
