As a young adult of todays advancing world, nonstop progress is essentially demanding.

Fast pace mentalities give people a compulsive need to stay productive. Social groups provide a
sense of belonging and offer people purpose in their lives. Discourse communities are social
groups in which an individual belongs to; inclusive of certain goals, expectations, forms of
communication, and particular roles.
I was born in 1996, which was the year I joined my family discourse community. I joined
my community of friends at Eastwood High School, as an incoming sophomore. My
friend/family communities both oblige me to be respectful and loyal to one another.
Communication is essential to both discourse communities, but my family group is more formal
and attentive than my friends group. For example, spending a Friday night with my friends
would involve multiple people my own age going to a movie; as opposed to spending a Friday
night with my family, which would consist of dinner at a nice restaurant. The comparison
between my family/friends discourse community lies within activities, verbal communication,
and personal interests. Forms of communication for both friends/family are associated with
media such as texting, calling, Facebook and Instagram, as well as the occasional letters and
birthday cards. Goals in both communities are to develop a long lasting connection and to
support one another.

The more people within discourse communities, the more roles are played within that
group. As a waitress at Village Inn, I am expected to take food and drink orders as well as having
a strong communication with employees, customers, cooks and managers. My own role as a
server in this discourse community is to be a team player, work cooperatively, and perform
effectively to achieve the goal of earning money.
Being a voice lesson student vastly contrasts from being a server through means of
expectations and overall atmosphere. I have been taking voice lessons for 10 years and consider
it a valuable discourse community to learn from. A single voice lesson involves only the teacher
and student, which as a student I am only expected to learn the music that is given to me.
Working at Village Inn and being a student to my voice lesson instructor both require me to be
respectful and responsive. Ultimately, the goals for each of these communities are to gain
experience and develop relationships.
