DI Lesson Planning

Teacher Name: Suzanne Williams

Subject Area: Math2nd Grade
Date: 12-2-14
State Standards/Benchmarks:
The student will:
SOL 2.1
a) read, write, and identify the place value of each digit in a 3-digit numeral,
using numeration models;
b) round 2-digit numbers to the nearest ten; and
c) compare two whole numbers between 0 and 999, using symbols (<, >, =)
and words
SOL 2.4
c) recognize even and odd numbers
Lesson Essential Question:
How can we describe/show a 3-digit number in various ways? This lesson will
be a culminating activity to show knowledge of skills covered during a multichapter unit on Number and Number Sense.
Time Required:
120 minutes (2 periods X 70 minutes); 1 period for project work, 1 period for
presentation
What will I differentiate?
o Contentdirect instruction and small group/1 on 1 assistance
o Processskills are introduced/taught through songs, videos, pictures,
paper/pencil activities, physical representations
o Productfinal project will be student selected activities to represent
their understanding of the skill

How will I differentiate?

o For Readinessthrough observation of daily activities, graded work
o Interestallowed to select activities from a choice board
o Learningthrough the use of multiple modes of displaying
knowledge: numbers, models, drawings, words, charts, technology
resources
o Affect/Learning Environmentstudents will work in cooperative
groups as teacher assists, they will have access to various mediums to
develop their presentation
o Combination
As a result of this lesson/unit students will:
Understand: Students will be able to represent 3-digit numbers in
multiple ways. They will demonstrate that numbers can be described
in the following ways: numbers, pictures, words, and physical models.
They will also understand that numbers can be described in terms of
rounding, odd/even, expanded form, comparison with other numbers,
and by using charts and number lines.
Know: place value, ones, tens, hundreds, models, number words,
greater than, less
than, equal to, standard form, expanded form, rounding
Do (Skills): work cooperatively in a small group, demonstrate multiple
ways to show a number, present their knowledge effectively
Pre-Assessment: Students are pre-assessed at the beginning of each unit.
I use a combination of teacher-made questions and from our Math text
(Macmillan/McGraw-Hill).
Steps in the Lesson:
1. Whole group: review different ways to show numbers. Encourage
students to describe ways to show numbers to generate a list of ideas.
2. Go over choice board activities and explain/clarify as needed.
3. Students will be divided into pre-determined groups and given a
number card, a choice board of activities, and supplies.
4. Students will then work together to determine/sign-up for a particular
activity from the given choices (teacher will intervene as necessary).
Students may pair up to complete two activities together if needed.
Students will be expected to complete at least two activities from the

given choices. Early finishers will assist teammates or choose another

activity from the choice board or to come up with other ways to show
the number.
5. Students will practice their presentation within their small group before
presenting it to the entire class.
Closure Activity/Wrap up: Students will present their project to the class.
Student audience will be allowed to ask questions/discuss at the end of each
presentation. Grading rubric will be used to assess presentation.
Post-Assessment: Student presentations will be evaluated using a rubric.
An end of unit test will be administered as well. Testing data will be used to
determine readiness for upcoming lessons on regrouping with
addition/subtraction.
