Lets know how to pass the laws


Level: 4th year.
Duration: 1 hour.

Activity type: Exploratory

PART 1 Instructions:

The class will be divided in two big groups. One group will represent a right-wing
party and the other one, a left-wing party.
Name your party and sign in the table given.
I (teacher) will be the President of the Republic of Class (our country). I will
propose you a law for the class in a piece of paper, i. e.: There will be no more
talking in the class, only silence will be permitted. As the Presidents give you a
proposal, you will have to discuss in your group whether you agree with or not. You
will have 7 minutes to discuss a law.
After discussing, you will have to write down the arguments you have discussed.
You have 3 minutes to finish the writing, a model will be given to you.
Then, name a Representative of your party to come to the front and discuss with the
others wing Representative the points you approved or disapproved and back up
your partys opinion. Each Representative will have 1.50 minutes to present their
arguments and 1.50 more minutes to discuss to points your party does not agree
with the other Representative.
Afterwards, all of the members of this House of Representatives will have to vote
the bill. Three options are permitted: Yes/No/Pass. If a law has more than 50% +1,
it will be approved and applied for the time agreed in the bill.
Finally, the laws and rights will be published in the class room as the Constitution
Bill of the Class.
Note: As you are part of a Party, you can also propose rules to be discussed and
may be approved to be applied in the class.

PART 3 Examples of laws proposals


1. Article n1: No mobile phone will be allowed in the class for the next two weeks. If
this law is broken, a $10.000 infraction will be collected from that person.

2. Article n2: No litter will be allowed to be thrown away, the class must be free of
any paper, wrapper or bottle. If any of these types of litter is seen by the teacher, a
$20.000 infraction will be collected from all the class members.

1. Lead-in: Teacher starts the class talking about communication and how we use the language for
different uses and ask students to provide different uses of the language, if they know any.

Teacher introduces his grandmother and she is going to bake a pie, so she invited me her home to have
a piece of cake. So, I talked to my mom and she said that it would be great to visit her. Lets make it a
plan! So, this weekend I am going to visit my grandma! :D
Then, teacher asks students to tell him about their future plans using going to.
2. Practice
Teacher shows a picture about different people showing what their plans are for next weekend and
students have to provide the sentences in a chart prepared by the teacher on the whiteboard.

CREATING AN ALPHABET
Each student will take 5 letters of the alphabet (teacher will give each student the
letters) and look for words that their classmates may not know.
Students will have to create flashcards with the new word and a drawing of the word.
One of the words will be created by the student.
After having the flashcards in groups of four, Ss will tell the meaning of the word and
the correct pronunciation .also Ss will have to find out which are the created words.
After the discussion in groups, the flashcards will be stuck all over the classroom.

GUESS WHAT AM I DOING


This miming game can be used to teach or review the present continuous tense.
Teacher has prepared a set of flashcards, each of them contain action sentences.
(Some of the flashcard are attached). The class is separated into two teams. Before
they start the activity, the teacher will mime one of the action sentences (simple
sentence) and the students will have to guess what the teacher is doing. Teacher will
ask: WHAT AM I DOING? The group that guesses the activity of the teacher will decide
if they start or the other group.
Each group will choose a represented that will mime the activity (students can also take
turns) the first team to get the mime correct wins a point. When a team gets ten points,
they win the game.

STOP THE PEN


Students will be separated into two groups they will choose one represented that will write in
front of the class.
On the board will be two charts which will contain different aspects they will have to fill in. the
teacher will say a letter of the alphabet and they will have to fill the chart with words that begin
with the letter that the teacher gave.

Instructions:
