Title:

Life Cycle of a Plant

Overview/Annotation:

This unit will allow students to explore the world of plants.


Students will have the opportunity to observe plant growth. The
students will plant a plant and observe it grow. They will draw a
diagram of the Plant Life Cycle. This unit is a fun and interactive
way for students to gain knowledge about plants.

Students will identify the basic needs of plants and describe their
life cycle.

7. Describe the life cycle of plants, including


seed, seed germination, growth, and reproduction.

Students will collect and interpret data about plant growth.

Journal; markers; crayons; construction paper; camera

Background/Preparation: Students should be familiar with plants. They should know how to
plant plants.
Procedures/Activities:

1.)Day 1
Introduction to Plants
Students will become familiar with important terms of the Life
Cycle of a Plant. They will look at different types of plants and
plant seeds. Students will discuss what they observed about the
differences of the plants and plant seeds. They will look at the
different stages of a plant. Have students illustrate and label the
different stages of the Life Cycle of a Plant
2.)Day 2
Using seeds, soil, and pots students will plant their plant seeds.
Students will write a journal entry on the steps used to plant their
seeds. The camera group will take photos every other day of each
stage of development.
3.)Day 3, 4, and 5
The students will draw in their journals what their plant looks like
each day

Day 6- Students will work on transplanting and thinning their


plants to aid in the growth. They will record their observations in
their journals.

9.)Day 9- This day will be used to prepare and review for the final
production day. They make sure they have all of their drawings,
print out their pictures, paste them onto construction paper, then
attach them into their journals in the order they belong.
10.)Day 10- Students will present the finished product. This will
include their journals, the pictures from every other day, and their
Life Cycle of a Plant illustration.
Assessment Strategies:

The teacher should check the journals to see if students accurately


identified the parts of the plants and described what stage of the
plant cycle is being shown.
The teacher should give the students a formal assessment test with
pictures of the different stages of the plant cycle and the students
tell which stage is being presented.
