Lesson Plan 1
I.
Benchmark/Standard:
6 G1.3.1 Use the fundamental themes of geography (location, place, human
environment interaction, movement, region) to describe regions or places on
earth.
6 G1.3.2 Explain the locations and distributions of physical and human
characteristics of Earth by using knowledge of spatial patterns.
6 G1.3.3 Explain the different ways in which places are connected and how
those connections demonstrate interdependence and accessibility.
II.
Behavioral Objective:
In groups of 5, students will investigate how Latinos influenced popular music in
the U.S. Each group will have an assigned U.S. City to investigate. They will also
relate their investigation with the fundamental themes of geography , location,
place, human environment interaction, movement, and region.

Prompt: What are some different styles/genres of music that you like? Where do
you think they originated? 2-3 sentences

Objective/Purpose/ Essential Question:
How does the Latino music in the U.S. relate to the five themes of geography?

a. Location: Where is it? (absolute/relative)

c. Human environment interaction: How do humans change their

3. Instructions for group investigation:
a. Split up class into 5 mixed ability groups
b. Assign a U.S. city to each group.
c. Hand out worksheet with questions related to the five themes of
geography
d. Have students go to the website: https://americansabor.org/story

their 5 themes sheet.
