Painted Ponies
Undesirable Behavior Targeted:
Disorganization characterized by participants returning their bridle and saddle to the incorrect location (e.g.,
hanging horse As bridle on horse Bs bridle bracket). As a result, when participants return for their second
session, they cannot locate the correct tack for their horse. This requires the facilitator and volunteers to
search for the correct tack, which takes time away from the session.
Desirable (expected) Behavior Targeted:
Returning tack to the correct location consists of the participant locating the bridle bracket and saddle rack with
the sticker matching their horses assigned color. Participant will then hang their bridle on the bridle bracket
and place their saddle on the saddle rack with the cantle of the saddle facing out (i.e., back of saddle).
Types of positive reinforcements - Reinforced when & how?
Immediate R+: A cut out of a paintbrush will be given to each participant that returns their horses bridle and
saddle to the correct color coded bridle bracket and saddle rack in the tack room.
Delayed R+: At the end of the session, if a participant received a paintbrush then they will color in one jigsaw
piece on the jigsaw horse.
Overall R+: Once all the puzzle pieces are colored in (total = 25), the entire group gets to paint their horse with
pony paints.
How to Administer:
The paint brushes (Immediate R+) will be given to the participants at the end of the session if they return their
horses bridle and saddle to the correct color coded bridle bracket and saddle rack in the tack room. The
jigsaw horse picture (Delayed R+) will be colored in, one piece at a time, at the end of the session. Each
paintbrush will equal one jigsaw piece colored. Once the entire jigsaw horse is colored in then the group gets
to paint their horses (Overall R+).
Interactive Learning Activity:
Purpose: improve fine motor skills. I will provide pony paints with all different colors. Participants can use paint
brushes or their hands to paint their horses. Participants will be instructed to only paint the horses body not
their faces.
Explain HOW you will teach the Desired Behaviors:
At the end of the first session, I will bring all the participants to the tack room. I will then proceed to
demonstrate/model skill by breaking it up into steps.
Step 1: I will tell participants to go to the bulletin board in the tack room and look at the schedule to determine
which horse they will ride in each session.
Step 2: I will explain to participants that each horse has an assigned color and that color determines which saddle
and bridle their horse needs.
Step 3: I will tell the participants to walk over to the bridle brackets and saddle racks on the wall. I will tell
participants that each bridle bracket and saddle rack will have a color sticker. Participants will locate the
bridle racket and saddle rack that has the color sticker that matches their horses assigned color. This will be
the bridle and saddle they will use. Ex: I am going to ride Sport and Sports color is red. I am going to find
the bridle bracket and saddle rack with red stickers and take the bridle and saddle from those racks
Step 4: At the end of the session, I will tell the participants that they need to return their saddle and bridle to the
correct color coded bridle bracket and saddle rack.
Step 5: Participants will have the opportunity to practice the skill with facilitator assistance if needed.
Explain HOW you will teach the Plan:
After participants are taught the desired behavior, I will tell them that each time they bring their tack back to the
correct location they will receive a paint brush. Once they get their paint brush they get to walk up to the bulletin
board and color in one puzzle piece. When the entire horse is colored in then everyone gets to paint their horses.
Provide options:
Participants can use color coding to help them organize at school (e.g., red folder=homework, blue folder= notes
for parents etc)
