Geometric Shapes Lesson Plan

Rational
The purpose of the lesson is to have the students master the concept of geometric shapes and
having them interpret the shapes by the number of faces they each have.
Standards
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.G.A.1
Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a
given number of equal faces.1 Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and
cubes.
Objective
Given card board cut outs of each solid figure they have learned (Cube, Pyramid, and Cylinder),
students will be able to cut out and perform the task of creating each three dimensional shape.
Also they will be able to complete a worksheet that has the students determine the shape
based off the number of faces given.
Lesson Progression
Introduction:

Bring the class together at the carpet and review the three dimensional shapes using the white
board
Review how many faces each shape has
Show each cutout net and have the students tell you what shape it will create (working on
visualization skills)
Show them the example of the three cut outs and explain to them how they will be creating
these themselves
o First cut them out
o Then fold along creases
o Create the shape
o Glue together

Middle:

Send them back to their seats and handout the three different cut outs (different colors)
Then have the students complete the worksheet, and they can relate to their 3d shapes that
they created to help them

Closure:

Once the students have completed this, if time is left, hand out a more challenging worksheet
that has them review the shapes one more time to really make sure they understand them

Materials

Scott Foremans resource page 251-252

Net cut outs for each child, different colors
Scissors and glue (at desks)
Worksheets for the students
Visuals of the 3D shapes they have been learning
A chart with the shapes, that the students will complete together on the carpet

Assessment
Students will be able to create the three shapes and be able to identify which shape is what by looking
at the net cut outs. This will prove that the students understand the concept of 3D shapes
Differentiation
Higher level group- Have the worksheet ready for the students who work quickly and complete the
assignment ahead of time. Have a challenging worksheet that follows if time still permits.
Lower level group- Guide them with the cutting skills if they are having difficulty. Maybe show them our
cut outs. Possibly leave it on the desk while they are making their own. Review the faces with them one
more time individually in case they did not understand it the first time.
