Mr.

dEntremonts Philosophy
Teaching today in the 21st century requires teachers to bring numerous
beliefs, influencers, and goals into their classrooms. I, as a secondary educator am
no different. Over time these items will change just as history has taught us and as a
secondary educator I will embrace changes such as these. To ensure these changes
fulfill the students needs, I will utilize the most up to date teaching styles and
methods possible while upholding the schools mission on student achievement.
I believe, as a teacher there should be two big ideas that break down into
little ideas. These ideas are (1) using what we know to dig deeper into content and
(2) make connections between disciplines to show complete understanding of a
topic. In history, students see that no civilization has been perfect and that mistakes
were created. This concept is also what will be applied in my classroom to my
students. Students will look at mistakes and learn from them, as well as learn from
their own mistakes.
While continuing to meet state standards and missions set forth by the
school, students will see my teaching philosophy by looking at the significance of
each historical event and how the event is still being felt today. This does not strictly
apply to just historical events, but this will apply to current events as they occur. I
will strongly encourage and support my students to use multiple sources and views
to arrive at a conclusion that they will feel satisfied with when studying a topic.

Students not only need to be given the opportunity to practice and obtain
research skills, but they also need the time to argue valid points. This is why my
teaching style will incorporate seminars, debates, discussions, round-tables, and
other means of voicing arguments in class. Secondary students need to be given the
fair chance to develop a sense of identity before graduation and entering the real
world.
I believe is keeping students engaged throughout a topic. Unfortunately
students have preconceptions that threaten to hurt the quality of a lesson. However
by making lessons applicable to students lives outside of school, there is much more
meaning to the content. As a teacher I strive to make my lessons a conversation
outside my classroom. Although I may not be around to hear those conversations, it
is certainly a goal I strive for.
Finally, as a teacher I believe your teaching style must fit and connect with
each student in some shape, way, or form. I believe as a teacher it is important to
talk to your students when in front of the class, and not at your students. Every
person wants to be cared and valued for and by talking to my students and making a
connection with them, I believe that my mission of a teacher can be achieved.
