Wilmington Middle School

School Rules:
1. Preparedness- Students are expected to come to class on time prepared with
all necessary supplies and ready to learn and participate. Students are not
permitted to miss more than eight school days without due consequence.
2.
Responsibility- Students are to be responsible for their own work and are
expected to turn in assignments in a timely manner, thus displaying effective time
management.
3.
Respect- Students are encouraged to treat others the way they would wish to
be treated, with dignity and empathy, including faculty, staff, peers, and school
property.
4.
Collaboration- Students will work together to share ideas and participate in
group work using effective interpersonal communication.
Consequences:
1st Consequence: Verbal warning
2nd Consequence: Students name is documented in the conduct log.
3rd Consequences: After 3 documentations the student has a private conference
with the teacher about the misbehavior and a demerit is issued.
4th Consequence: If the behavior persists then the teacher and student must sign
the documentation log and a note is sent to the parent as well as the main office.
5th Consequence: A meeting is arranged with the parent, guidance counselor, and
principal if necessary.
*Disclaimer: after a total of 5 demerits are issued a student must serve an after
school detention where some service is completed that aligns with the offense.

Team Encouragement Strategies:

Here at Wilmington Middle School, we strongly believe in positive reinforcement and
we try to stay away from only acknowledging poor behavior. Our students work hard

on their homework, tests, and proper classroom conduct, so we try to acknowledge

and encourage their good work. Some strategies we use are:

Stickers on tests that score 90% or above

Free-seat Friday we let our students stray from the seating chart and
choose their own seats on Fridays

Donut Day in homeroom every other Monday

Activity Day once a month activities range from colonial day, field trips,
interesting presenters, field days

Student of the Week

Breakfast Club the students who have exceptional behavior or

participation in class are rewarded by having the privilege to eat breakfast
with the principal (every other Thursday)
Parent Teacher Conference Format:

The parent and the teacher need to understand each other and their concerns for
the student in question. Therefore, it is important that specific topics are addressed
in the meeting:

The strengths and weaknesses of the student should be discussed so the

parents can help and encourage the student accordingly.

Homework should be discussed, so the parents can help the teacher

understand how the student works at home.

The students social life might need to be touched upon, especially if they are
having problems getting along or fitting in with others.

If there are any subject areas that the student is struggling with, they should
be addressed, so that any confusion can be cleared up.

Goals for the student should be made, so they have something to work
towards.

There needs to be a time for any questions that the parents may have. Also,
a follow-up may be necessary if there is not enough time or there is an
ongoing problem or concern.
Team Procedures:

In order to ensure school-wide success, the following procedures will be set in place:
Assignments & Late homework

All homework must be turned in on time and is the student's responsibility

Any assignment that is not turned in on time will deduct points from overall
grade.
One day late = 2 point deduction
Two days late = 4 point deduction
Three days late = 6 point deduction
Four days late = 8 point deduction
Five days or more = No credit and will no longer be accepted by teacher

If student makes a habit of turning in homework late - parents will be

contacted & meeting will be arranged.

If by chance the student is absent for an illness or any emergency reason,

there will be other accommodations.

School Lockers

Lockers are given and assigned to every student on the first day of school

Locks will be given with a code for the student to remember

Lockers may be accessed before school starts, before and after recess,
during lunch, and in-between class times.

Lockers must be kept clean as well as organized and will be checked

throughout the school year.

No bulky belongings (bags, purses, objects) will be permitted on the student.

If questionable items are found in a students locker (drugs, weapons, etc),

the items will be confiscated.

All sporting bags will be kept in lockers as well

School/Community Plan

Building a strong sense of community between our staff and students is very
important to us at Wilmington Middle School. We believe that by fostering a strong
community in our schools and building a sense of a school family, that our students
will have a support team that cares for them academically, behaviorally, and
emotionally.
At Wilmington Middle we work to build a strong school community that instills
the qualities of character, cooperation, service, and empathy through our many
community-building activities throughout the school year:
Back to School Kickoff Event- welcoming new students and families to our
school community. The prior school years class video will be played for the
incoming and returning students to reflect on all that they have accomplished
in the past school year as well as what to look forward to in the upcoming
school year.
o School clubs and intramural teams will be introduced as well as all
faculty and staff.
Student council- Students will elect their peers for these leadership
positions.
Monthly School Newsletter- a team of students will collaboratively create a
school newsletter to inform family and friends on all that weve been up to at
Wilmington Middle in the past month.
Celebrate Heritage Week- Students will spend the week learning about their
own personal heritage. They will present their projects to their classmates,
and on the Friday of this week all family and friends will be invited to join us in
attending our heritage event where the students boards and projects will be
displayed
Art Fair- at the end of the year the art classes will create an art fair to display
all of their talented pieces from the past school year.
Grandparents Day- On national grandparents day we invite the students
grandparents to join their grandchildren for a special lunch in at the school
where the students will present various songs and skits. The grandparents

will then be invited to help their grandchild in creating a special craft together
that resembles something unique or special about their family.
Dignity Day- There are 4 dignity days throughout the semester where
students will be placed in teams for various group activities in order to build
teamwork and collaboration.
Service Projects- Students will work together to give back to the community
through various different activities throughout the year.
Intramural Sports- students have the opportunity to participate in various
intermural sports (basketball, volleyball, baseball, tennis, soccer, flag football,
and ultimate frisbee)
School Clubs- Glee club, drama club, publishing club (create the school
newsletter), reach out, book club, chess club, band, foreign language club
Spirit Days- students will have a spirit dress down day every other Friday
and on days when there are school pep rallies.
Theoretical Roots
The discipline model of Wilmington Middle School is founded upon the

extensive Choice Theory research of psychologist William Glasser. In its simplest

form, Glassers Choice Theory suggests a three-pronged philosophy. (1) All we do is
behave, (2) nearly all behavior is chosen, and (3) our genetic makeup drives us to
satisfy five basic needs: survival, love/belonging, power, freedom, and fun. As
intimacy with which the people we care is a prerequisite for satisfying all other
necessities, our need to love and belong is considered in highest regard. Students
who are not loved and accepted by teachers and/or peers are likely to behave in
ways that negatively disrupt the learning process. We, the teachers and
administrators of Wilmington Middle School, thus strive to create a caring learning
community where trust, respect, and tolerance are nurtured. Though we realize we
cannot directly control student behavior, we can assist students in identifying the
circumstances that often trigger misbehavior. Such knowledge will likely empower
them to alter the reaction that intensifies disruptive misconduct. It is our hope that, in
changing these reactions, students will succeed in positively adjusting individual
behavior and therefore contribute to an ordered classroom.
