Explore the Washington Monument
Second Grade

Lesson Length: 55 minutes or 1 class period

State (Objectives)
SOL 1.1 Allow students to explore environments, from their computer. Teaching
them history on former Presidents and other material that may have relevance.
SOL 1.2
a) Students will locate the Washington Monument through Earth Google.
b) Students will learn about President George Washington.
c) Students will describe the purpose of the monument.
d) Students will explain how the Monument and George Washington relate.

-Four computers located inside classroom, with internet access
-One projector Screen
Material
-Blank white paper
-Markers, crayons, pencils
-Scissors
-Glue
-Journal notebooks
-Chalkboard

Method
Introduction to the Washington Monument, and George Washington.
Group, and center activities instructions.
Individual assignment instructions.
Utilize Media, Materials and Methods
Media
4 computers: will be used to access the link http://earth.google.com. We will also
use the computer to explore through the Washington Monument.
1 projector screen: will be used to allow students to watch a brief Power Point on
the history of President George Washington, and the Monument.
Materials
Blank white paper: will be used for students to draw their image of the Washington
Monument.
Markers, crayons, pencils: used for coloring image and writing in journal
Scissors: used for cutting images into shapes formed
Glue: used for image creation
Journal notebooks: used to write down a vacation each student would like to visit.
Chalkboard: used to discuss what things were found, experienced, or learned during
google earth search.
Methods
Intro. To Washington Monument & George Washington: Start by asking students
how many have actually visited the Washington Monument. Then explaining the
Power Point the students will watch, on projector screen.
Instructions on Group and Center Activities: Students will separate in groups of
4, and go to a computer. Each station will have the link: http://earth.google.com for
students to access. We will then start typing our location and exploring the
Washington Monument.
Individual Assignment: Students will draw their own image of the Washington
Monument. They can cut paste and color, however they want to create it.
We will hang each students image of the Monument up throughout the classroom.
Require Learner Participation

Whole Group Introduction to Monument: Start by asking the class how many
have had the experience of visiting the Washington Monument. Then ask the class
what are some things we may see when exploring the Washington Monument. As
students raise hand to answer, teacher should write responses on board. Then
explain how we will be exploring the Monument today as our lesson plan.
Next start by explaining the Power Point that students will now watch, on projector
screen. Power Point will give students the history on President George Washington
and the Monument.
Whole Group Instructions to Center Activities: Students will separate in groups
of 4, and go to a computer. Each station will have the link: http://earth.google.com
for students to access. We will then start typing our location and exploring the
Washington Monument.
After exploring the monument, students will return to carpet, and we will discuss
what things we have learned and seen while exploring the Monument. We will also
talk about the interest in Earth Google.
Individual Assignment Instructions: Students will return to desk. And white
paper, markers, crayons, pencils, glue and scissors will be handed out. Students will
draw their own image of the Washington Monument. They can cut paste and color,
however they want to create it. We will hang each students image of the Monument
up throughout the classroom.
Students will take their journals, and write about a vacation or place they would like
to visit. They can discuss why they will like to visit it and what they will like to see
or do on that vacation.
Allow some students to share their ideas.
Provide students with website so they can explore at home with parents.

Evaluate and Revise


Students Performance: Students will be evaluated on how well they demonstrate the
information obtain and use it in discussions, and assignments. They will also be
evaluated on how much knowledge on the Washington Monument they were able to
obtain. That will be evaluated during classroom engagement discussion time. How
well they participate in discussion. They also will be evaluated on completion of
classroom assignments.

Instructor Performance: Teacher will take time to listen and observe during
classroom engagement session. Observing how much students have gain. Also
deciding if instructions were explained well to students, and if lesson should be
taught or went over again.
Media Performance: How well the computers worked and performed the duty it was
served to perform. Also how easy the students were able to located information
needed for lesson plan. If all access was available to students.
