Rationale for Genres

TimelineI chose to use the timeline as one of my genres because of how it shows the change
overtime of the debate. It shows how the worry and blame has shifted over time to new mediums
of entertainment. It starts out with print media like comic books, then shifts to television and
movies, the finally the blame ends up being pinned on video games. From this perspective one
might predict that in the future a new medium of entertainment will come out, and the gaze will
then shift from video games to this new medium.

Graph/ChartI chose to use the chart because of how clearly it shows that as video games became more
and more popular and mainstream, the violent crime rate decreased. From this information one
could infer that video games actually reduce real life crime. Also this shows that the violent
crime rate has been going down over the past few decades. Most likely if you were to ask
someone who watches the news often if they thought that the violent crime rate has been going

news seems to only report stories about politics, Hollywood, or crime.

Persuasive EssayI chose to use the persuasive essay because I felt it would be the best way to voice my
opinion on the topic. I could tell everyone what I felt and also give advice on how I think they
should approach the topic, and what parents should do about letting the children play video
games.

Advice column
I chose to use the advice column so that I could show some common questions that
people might have about violent video games and then give advice from my perspective so that
people would understand how I feel about the issue.
