BIG BONE LICK FIELD TRIP!

Dear Parent/Guardian,
Our Third Grade Class, will be taking a field trip to Big Bone Lick State Park in Union,
Kentucky on Friday, March 27, 2015. We will be leaving the school approximately at 8 in
the morning and arrive back to the school at 2:30 p.m. We will arrive to our location via
school bus around 8:45. Chaperones will be provided; we have 3 teachers in the other
classrooms that will be coming on the field trip.
The purpose of our field trip is to discover how fossils were created, the different
types of fossils, and the creatures that left their traces behind. This field trip will correlate
with the third grade INDOE Standard 2: Earth Science and INDOE Standard Speaking
and Listening. The three standards this field trip will cover are as followed: 3.2.4 Identify
fossils and describe how they provide evidence about the plants and animals that lived
long ago and the nature of their environment at that time; 3.2.5 Describe natural
materials and give examples of how they sustain the lives of plants and animals.
3.SL.2.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in
groups, and teacher-led) on grade-appropriate topics and texts, building on others ideas
and expressing personal ideas clearly.
The itinerary for our field trip will be to visit with the park tour guide. The park
tour guide will give us history about the park and about the fossils we are going to see.
After the presentation, we will visit the Outdoor Museum area until 11:30. We will then
have an hour long lunch. Make sure to pack a cold lunch. I will provide coolers for
drinks and lunch. If anyone needs assistance with lunch, write me a note. I will provide
extra lunches,in case someone forgets. Everyone is required to bring their own lunch.
After lunch, about 12:30, we will then go on a discovery trail. The discovery trail last 4.5
miles, so everyone make sure you have comfortable shoes on! The discovery trail will
last for the remainder of the time until 1:45; we need to meet at the park entrance at first
where we came in to get on the bus. After everyone is on the bus, we will arrive back to
the school at 2:30. The field trip cost will be free! All expenses will be paid by the
school. On our arrival back to school, we will have a classroom discussion about we
learned on the field trip. Students will share with the class what they most enjoyed and
what the learned about the different types of fossils on the Bib Bone Lick Field Trip.
