Unit
Shape and Space: Use direct and indirect measurement to solve problems
Demonstrate an understanding of perimeter of regular and irregular shapes by:
- estimating perimeter
- measuring and recording perimeter
- constructing different shapes for a given perimeter (cm, m) to demonstrate
that many shapes are possible for a perimeter
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Create a object and calculate its perimeter

Learning Activity
#1
Body
Introduce the activity Students will design their own robot on
graph paper. Explain to the students that they will draw the
robot, estimate the perimeter, and then calculate the perimeter
- Explain what a estimation is and that it is a educated guess
- Explain to the students that they can calculate a estimation by
thinking about how long the perimeter of their entire sheet of
graph paper is and then thinking about how much space their
robot takes up on the graph paper

Activity/Activities
- Walk around to each desk and ensure that the students are
designing the robot based on the squares
-
Once they are finished drawing you can hand out the
speech bubble. On the speech bubble they will name
their robot, estimate the perimeter, and calculate the
perimeter
- Students will write down their estimate and then they
will calculate their perimeter
- Tell the students that they can also calculate the
perimeter of their robot in sections
- Once they have finished they will switch with another
student to ensure that they have calculated the
perimeter of their robot correctly
- Students will then glue their speech bubble onto their
robot
- Did the students understand that they have to color in
the squares?
- Did the students understand that the perimeter is the
distance around the object
- Collect the robots and check that they calculated the
perimeter correctly
Closure
- What was the difference between your estimation and your
actual perimeter.
