Describe the different senses through the popcorn. For example, how it feels or tastes.
Talk with other children about the senses.
Explain how the popcorn kernels turn into popcorn.
DRDP Measures:
Measure 16: language in conversation
Measure 21: letter and word knowledge
Material/Equipment Needed:
Popcorn maker
Popcorn kernels
Large bowl
Coffee filters
Popcorn poster
Preparation:
Create a poster to write down the different ways the children describe the popcorn.
Place popcorn maker on the table and the large bowl.
Procedure: (step by step)
*Beginning (How will I introduce activity?)
I will introduce the activity by asking, Who has eaten popcorn before? or Do eat
popcorn when you go to the movies?

I will then ask, What do you see on the table? We will then start by putting the popcorn
kernels into the popcorn maker to watch them popping. I will ask, What happens to the
kernels when they heat up? How does the popcorn jump?

*Middle: (How will I support/enhance/scaffold?)

I will then place the popcorn in the individual coffee filters for each child to observe. I
will have the children smell, feel, touch, and taste the popcorn. How does the popcorn
smell? How does the popcorn feel in your mouth? How does it taste?
I will ask each child to describe in their own words the different senses. For example,
(childs name), how do you think the popcorn felt?
*End: (How will I bring activity to conclusion and transition to next activity?)
I will bring out the popcorn poster to write what the children say. The popcorn poster will
have the five different senses. I want to see the which childrens answers where similar
and different.
Afterwards, we will clean up and start heading to the door to get ready to go outside.
