The amount of school that is completed before kids dropout has also increased
29% of kids dropped out in 1990 with less than 9 years of school, 18% of kids dropped out in
2012 with less than 9 years of school
This study targets 16-24 year olds
Definition of status dropouts- not enrolled in school and havent earned a diploma or GED
This is not the same as the studies that show kids who havent received a diploma within 4
years of school
Status dropouts dont have a high school level of education
Lot of improvement after 2000, but now dropout rates arent changing from 7%.
Data of study is based on sample surveys of the general population (excluding prisoners,
military personnel and homeless people)
For females, the dropout rate declined from 12 to 6%
Dropout rate is higher for males than females
For males, the dropout rate declined from 12 to 7%
Race categories that were surveyed didnt exclude Hispanic people- they are included in the
other races
Dropout rate is lower for Whites than African Americans and Hispanics
Whites- 9 to 4%
African Americans- 13-8%
Hispanics- 32-13%
% gap between Whites and Hispanics decreased from 23-8%
White and Black rates declined, but gap did not change until 2000 (by 50%)
Lowest quarter- bottom 25% of family incomes
Middle low quarter- families between 25th percentile and median
Middle high quarter- families between median and 75th percentile
Highest quarter- top 25% of family incomes
Dropout rate declined for low and middle income young adults
Lowest income- decreased from 24 to 12%
Middle low income- decreased from 15-9%
Middle high income- 9-4%
Highest income- no significant decline
High income families obviously had lower dropout rates than low income families, however,
gap between the two decreased from 21-10% by 2012.

This source is a very detailed study based on various government authorized surveys of status
dropout rates that compares gender, ethnicities, income, and institutional status to show that
while dropout rates have declined in the past, they have been stagnant in recent years.
