1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
A lot of people think that working for a nonprofit organization might be easier than a for-profit business,
but it is quite the opposite.
2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
(educational level and requirements)
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and Master of Business Administration. I attend an
annual conference in Washington to keep current as well as voluntary training sessions on Adobe products and
other tools to keep me fresh.
3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
(day-to-day activities)
There are staff meetings, Board meetings, networking functions, community events, fundraisers and other
out-of-office activities, as well as several in-office duties. I have to prepare monthly and annual reports, marketing
materials, make website changes, plan meetings for students, and manage some of the other office activities. I am
also encouraged to volunteer on several community boards and assist chambers of commerce and our main donors
with functions.
4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?
(job security)
I think my position is secure because our office is small so we are able to keep a lean overhead and adjust
rapidly to changes in the economy. I also think my education and ability to work in different functional areas as
needed helps with that.
5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?
Revised Fall 2013

(salary)
As a marketer, but for a nonprofit organization, my salary range is lower than it would be in a for-profit
company. In this industry, it can range from $30,000 to $50,000.
6. What potential for growth is there in your field?
(growth potential)
As you can imagine, the potential for growth in my field is better for those that are able to adapt to the
digital age than those who are not. Not just with social media, but all message delivery.
7. What is the most rewarding experience you have had at your job?
Working with our Student groups, like Youth Advisory Board and Student United Way has been the most
rewarding experience by far. There are no words to describe the pride and joy I feel when I see young people
come together and share their talents and time to benefit their community.
8. How do you think that United Ways marketing strategies have helped improve participation in events?
I think that recognizing peoples efforts and showing that it takes teamwork makes them feel more involved, so I
use real photos and stories versus stock art to appeal to those in our community who want to get involved.
9. Was there someone or something that inspired you to take this job?
I had a boss when I was just starting college who was a really good marketer. He taught me a lot and I enjoyed
doing it, so when I was offered the chance to do marketing for an organization like United Way that also helps
people, it was a no-brainer. I have never looked back.
10. What is a challenging experience that you have had to deal with while you worked at United Way?

It can be challenging to separate work and personal life. Not with United Way specifically, but I think
with many other jobs, it can be hard to disconnect outside of working hours.
