1) In order to calculate the average LOS you will add up all the LOS in table 9.34 and then
divide them by the number there are. So this would end up being:
4+7+3+3+3+4+6+6+2+6+3+5+1+4+12+4+5+7+4+13+2+5+5+7+10+3+3+2+8+4+2+8=161
Then you will divide 161 by the number of cases were looking at, which is 32. So
161/32=5.03. Then well round to the nearest whole number, so the average LOS is 5
days.
2) The easiest way to find the mode is to line up all the LOS in order from smallest to
greatest. So this would be 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7,
7, 7, 8, 8, 10, 12, and 13. Six patients stayed for 3 days and six patients stayed for 4 days.
So there are two modes for the LOS of these cases 3 and 4.
3) The median LOS would be the number in the middle. So you would take the same list of
numbers from above that are already in order and figure out which of those numbers
falls in the middle of the set. Since we have an even number of cases, it would be
possible for there to be two medians, however both middle numbers are 4. So the
median LOS would be 4.
4) Variance is the average of the squared differences from the mean. So you will take each
number in the list, subtract 5 and then square it. Then we add them all together and
divide them by 5. This would give us
16+9+9+9+9+4+4+4+4+4+4+1+1+1+1+1+1+0+0+0+0+1+1+1+4+4+4+9+9+25+49+64=253.
Then we want to divide 253 by our mean, which is 5. So 253/5=50.6. So our variance is
50.6. To calculate the standard deviation all you have to do is find the square root of the
variance. So the square root of 50.6 (rounded to the nearest tenth) is 7.1.
5) Using the data in table 9.34 you would find the average gross charges the same way you
found the average length of stay. All youre going to do is add up all of the charges and
then divide by the number of cases, which is 32. So $468,233/32=$14,632.28. So the
average amount these 32 patients were charged is $14,632.28.
6) You would find the average age of all 32 patients the same way. So 1946.7(all the ages
added together)/32(the total number of cases)= 60.8 (rounded to the nearest tenth)
Therefore the average age of patients seen was 60.8.
7) To find the average age of all patients discharged to SNF you first need to add up the
ages of all the patients who were discharged to SNF. This comes to 689.3. Then you
need to figure out how many patients went to SNF, which is 9. So you will divide 689.3
by 9. 689.3/9=76.6(rounded to the nearest tenth) So the average age of patients
discharged to SNF is 76.6 years old.

8) To find the average age of all patients discharged to home you first need to add up all of
their ages. This comes to 420.9. Then youll figure out how many patients altogether
were discharged home, and divide by that number, which is 9. So 420.9/9=46.8(rounded
to the nearest tenth) So the average age of patients discharged home is 46.8.
