The Purpose of This

Survey

Human
Metapneumovirus
Survey
Who was the
audience of this
survey?
The audience was anyone who
could be at risk for hMPV
infection. The age of
participants ranged from the
groups (0-1) to (35+). Those
who were not able to answer
the questions could request
assistance. The survey was
conducted through Survey
Monkey and I posted links to
the survey on Facebook and
Twitter. A total of 56 people
participated.

Not much information is known

about hMPV. The purpose of this
survey was to shed more insight
on the virus and its effects. Many
healthcare professionals are
aware of the impacts of hMPV,
but others are not. This survey
intended to give myself more
information as well as my
audience. Based on previous
research three main hypotheses
were developed in response to
the survey. They are:

Health care professionals

are more aware of hMPV
because they are more
exposed to viruses.
40% of all participants
exhibit at least two risk
factors or severe
symptoms of hMPV
Women are taking better
precautionary measures
in preventing hMPV
infection than men are
due to their natural
maternal instinct.

According to the sample of 56 participants, my

hypotheses that 40% of people have experienced
two or more severe symptoms of hMPV and health
professionals are more aware of hMPV were not
supported by the data. Approximately 25% of the
participants or 15 people have suffered from two
or more severe symptoms of hMPV. While that
number isnt as high as I predicted, it still does
show that a quality amount of people are at risk
for hMPV infection without even knowing what
the virus is. Furthermore, 66% of participants have
experienced one or more mild risk factors for
hMPV. Only 12% of the participants were aware of
hMPV, signifying the publics lack of knowledge on
this microscopic predator. My data revealed that
there wasnt much correlation between healthcare

experience and awareness of hMPV. Both those

who have taken healthcare courses and those who
havent were relatively clueless regarding the
virus. My hypothesis that women are taking better
precautionary measures than men are at
preventing hMPV infection was supported by the
data. There was a significant difference in hand
washing time between males and females. 53% of
females wash their hands between 30-60 seconds.
Compare this to the mere 38% of men who wash
their hands for the same length of time.
Furthermore, men tend to practice the bad habit
of touching their eyes, nose, and/or mouths more
than women. This is an excellent way for viruses to
enter the body and women are doing a better job
at protecting themselves from infection. Overall,
this survey illuminated the cloudy subject of hMPV
and provided myself with valuable information
regarding specific target groups of hMPV.
