CHDV 210 Creative Art Activity Self Evaluation Form

Why did you choose this particular activity? (DRDP, conversation with child, etc.)
I chose this activity because the children were learning about how to be clean and how to be
healthy. My goal for this activity was to encourage proper hygienic practices by providing a
creative activity using sensory materials. I wanted to teach children why it is important wash
their hands and how much germs spread.
What were the strong points of this activity?
One of the strong points of this activity were how engaged the children were. There were some
children who had trouble waiting for their turn. For instance, one boy was waiting for his turn
and was becoming impatient. So, while he was waiting, I let him help me with the glitter. As
stated by Epstein, young children are eager to get started on an activity, and waiting for a turn is
difficult for them, (Epstein, 12). I think through this activity I started getting a little more
comfortable with conflict negotiation.
What were the weak areas?
This activity was very messy and I did not have a plan for how to keep the children clean. I did
not think that the glitter would be hard to take off the children. According to Epstein, social
interaction and insights, children note what their peers do, see, and say, (Epstein 12). For
example, Adam started clapping his hands together with his hands full of shaving cream. Noah
noticed this and also started clapping his hands together. I had trouble trying to tell the children
that this would cause shaving cream to get into the eyes of the other children.
What specific changes did you try out when you presented the activity a second time?
For my redo, I made a lot of changes that helped a lot. Instead of just placing the shaving cream
on the table, I placed four trays and had the children spoon shaving cream on a piece of paper. I
also had the children wear aprons to prevent shaving cream get on their clothes. Another change
I made was changing the glitter to cinnamon. The whole classroom ended up smelling like a
gingerbread house after.
Evaluate the success of these revisions. How might you improve next time? (Focus on your
teaching skills)
These changes made a much less messy clean up. Also, the children were not all crowding
around to have a turn because it was a lot more organized. The children understood that if they

did not have an apron on or a tray, they had to wait their turn. I might improve this by having a
cinnamon shaker that only let out a little cinnamon at a time. This would prevent it from the
children inhaling it.
Did your curriculum activity meet your stated objective? Support your answer with
specific examples from your observation of the childrens involvement in the activity.
The second time I did my activity, I had a lot more conversations with the children. For
example, one child wanted to mix the plato with the shaving cream to see what would happen.
As stated by Epstein, teachers can support childrens language development with many
different strategies, including taking conversational turns with them, observing and listening
while children take time to formulate and express their thoughts, (Epstein, 15).
The children did understand how germs get everywhere just like the glitter did.
According to Epstein, providing content by explicitly introducing information or modeling
specific skills is not only permissible but essential, (Epstein, 16). A few children were talking
about how the glitter got all over them just like germs do if you dont wash your hands.
I think this activity also helped me start becoming a lot more comfortable with the
children. As stated by Epstein, the primary way teachers facilitate peer relationships is by
themselves building authentic, supportive, and reciprocal relationships with children, (Epstein,
18). Although some of the children were still not comfortable with me, I think it helped when I
started talking with them about the activity.
Based upon your informal assessment of the children during this activity, how would you
build upon this activity? What would be the next curriculum activity you would plan in
this area to enhance the childrens learning and why would you choose this next activity?
To build on this activity, I would read the children a story about how to take care of their bodies.
I think the best would be an interactive story to see what the children learned through the art
activity.
