any threats to the diversity of
life on Earth. This
organizations goals are to
protect and restore various
species and their natural
habitats. They strive to work
with local and global
communities in hope to
conserve natural resources
that have negative effects on
habitats such as the Artic. You

Polar Bears
in Need

Q&A

Why is there an increase in human and

bear interaction?
There is an increase in human and bear
interaction because of the fact that polar
bears are searching for an alternative
source of food. The interaction can be
harmful for both the human and polar
bear resulting in the death of the bear.

Artic Polar Bears in Danger

Human behavior such as hunting,
pollution, and oil exploration has had an
extremely negative effect on the survival
rates of polar bears in the Artic. The
population of polar bears has declined over
20% in the last ten years. Climate change is a
major threat to the survival of the bears
because it lowers the access to hunting
grounds for the bears. Despite the efforts of
organizations polar bear populations are still
in the decline. Many people are aware of the
dangers that the polar bears are facing, yet
some officials and scientists tend to disagree
that global warming is one of the main issues.
They state that polar bears should not be the
only bear we are concerned about. The
hunting for animals that goes on in the Artic
also plays a huge part in the depopulation of
this species. Scientists do not believe that
cutting down the greenhouse gases, will
make a difference to the health and well-

being of the bears. Contrary to previous findings,

some researchers have shown multiple times that
indeed global warming does lead to polar bear
depopulation. Global warming has led to
depopulation since this issue was discovered in the
1950s. The melting ice caps that are caused by the
heat that is being produced by global warming is
causing polar bears to have to swim across large
lengths of water in order to find stable hunting
grounds. In this process, the polar bears become
fatigued causing them to drown. The amount of food
that the polar bears have access to is not enough to
keep them fed for long periods of time. Not having
proper nutrition results in the early deaths of
themselves and their offspring contributing to the
decreasing population. The polar bear population
has the possibility to reproduce and repopulate
once again only if humans begin to take matters into
their own hands.

What does the future look like for polar

bears if no action is taken?
If no action is taken, polar bears are
expected to completely disappear within
the next one hundred years. A
combination of global warming, human
and bear interaction, and a decrease in
their food supply will all contribute to
their extinction.
What effect will polar bear extinction have
on the Artic?
If polar bear extinction were to occur, seal
population would increase resulting in a
decrease in the fish population. The
decrease in fish population would also
affect humans in a way where they would
have to turn to alternative food sources.
