place by three powerful weapons designed to cause or threaten women with pain
and loss (Pharr 163).
Femininity: The aspect of the female sex. Clearly, differentiation between strong
and weak, powerful and powerless, has been a central defining aspect of gender
globally, carrying with it the assumption that men should have greater authority
than women , and should rule over them (Hooks 657).
Masculinity: This is the definition that we will call hegemonic masculinity, the
image of masculinity of those men who hold power, which has become the
standard in psychological evaluations, sociological research, and self-help and
advice literature for teaching young men to become real men (Connell, 1987).
The hegemonic definition of manhood is a man in power, a man with power, and a
man of power. We equate manhood with being strong, successful, capable,
reliable, in control. The very definitions of manhood we have developed in our
culture maintain the power that some men have over other men and that men have
over women (Kimmel 86).
Objectification: Treat a person as an object. Women are treated as objects in
music videos. The goal is to get the heterosexual male or the viewers attention.
The image sex and gender roles portray in music videos provides a
misinterpretation and affects young adolescents.
As for females, theyre driven by the male sexual desire. The womens
body is always exposed, as opposed to a male is rarely who exposed.
In those music videos were women are objectified and their bodies
are exposed, the intended purpose is simply to please men.
In society, often times we are told beauty isnt what lies on the
outside, but rather whats in the inside. If this is how it is perceived in
society, then why has fashion become culture? Majority of American
women spend so much time and money just to fit into a social group.
Its difficult to separate sex and violence, because often times women
are portrayed as weak and men feel they can physically overpower
women.
