Life on Mars in 2255

Why living on Mars? Imagine our planet invaded by aliens. Or the ozone layer
completely destroyed in the near future. Perhaps a meteor that threatens to hit
Earth. Would you like an exotic holiday in our galaxy? All these could be reasons for
living on another planet.
Before we could actually live on Mars, the planet needs to be transformed by
terraforming. Terraforming Mars means recreating the conditions on Earth. In order
to do this, there are several stages involved in this process. First of all, Mars needs
to be heated up. Since Mars is so cold, man will have to warm it up artificially. This
can be done by placing gigantic mirrors around the planet; they will amplify the
sun`s rays and raise the temperature. These mirrors will also melt the ice of the
poles and form oceans. When this is over, we will have a sufficient water supply.
Secondly, we will have to make oxygen. When the oceans are formed, we will grow
algae in them. The algae will use the gas in the Martian air to produce oxygen.
Furthermore, we will grow trees to make sure we have a constant supply of oxygen.
Finally, the last stage is developing agriculture. The first Martians will need
extensive agricultural programmes to produce their own food.
In conclusion, man together with animals and plants brought from Earth will be able
to start a new life on Mars.
