Title: Who are you Thankful For?
Pacing: 2-3 days

Grades 9-12

Concept: Saying thank you with art.


Concept Questions: How can you express your feeling of thanks in a piece of art.

Art Production:
AF.2- Student will make choices in the art-making process, including selecting
materials, incorporating elements of art and principles of design, and interpreting an idea
through selected media, to create works of art.
Analysis, evaluation and critique:
AF.16- The student will practice constructive approaches (e.g., formative, peer-to-peer,
self-reflective, summative) to critique works of art and design.
Enduring Understanding
Meaningful art making is about exploration, asking questions, problem solving and
developing a knowledge-base. Artworks are objects for interpretation.
Essential Questions/Learning Plan Questions:
How can an artist create meaningful art work through exploration and asking questions?
ASSESSMENT
Pre-assessment: Students are familiar with elements of art including value, line, and
texture.

Summative assessment: Students will learn to explore art media and processes to create
a work of art.
Students will KNOW- How to make decisions about their work during the art making
process.
Students will UNDERSTAND that- Art can be used as a way to tell someone how you
feel about them.
Students will DO - Make a thanksgiving card thanking someone important in their lives.
KEY CRITERIA:
Creation of a Thanksgiving card with a letter written to someone they are thankful to have
in their life.

SEQUENCE OF TEACHING & LEARNING


Day 1
T- Will introduce lesson by telling them the expectations and showing an example of the
project. Review elements of art that students have learned. They learned about line, shape
and value during the hallway drawing. Tell them that they can do a pencil drawing but
must shade to show value change. They can add color using a variety of media such as
crayons, colored pencils, colored paper and paint.
S- First students will write a letter to the person they are thankful for.
S- After writing the letter they will decide how they want to decorate the card. They will
choose to do a drawing with pencils, colored pencils, paint or cutting and pasting.
T- Tell the students that it does not have to be decorated with turkeys or pilgrims but
could be decorated to express their thanks for the person they wrote the letter to.
S- Students will work on creating their cards.
T- Will circulate room helping students problem solve and brainstorm ideas for the card.
S- Will clean up 10 minutes before cleanup time.
