Gym - Week 2 Day 3


Subject: Physical Education
Grade: Three/Four
Activity: Dance - YMCA
Total Time of Lesson: 30 minutes
Goal/Key Question: Question: How can I assess students basic level of movement and rhythm?
Goal: Get an idea of where students are at with movement and rhythm while learning the
YMCA.
Objective (connected to P of S):
General Outcome: A - Students will acquire skills through a variety of developmentally
appropriate movement activities; dance, games, types of gymnastics, individual activities, and
activities in an alternative environment.
Specific Outcome:
A4-8 select, perform, and refine basic dance steps and patterns; e.g, creative, folk, line, sequence,
and novelty, alone and with others.
A4-9 demonstrate a creative process to develop dance sequences alone and with others.
Materials:
- CD player/Ipod dock

What are the teachers/students doing?

Warm up
2 minutes

Students will run 5 laps when they get into the gym

Explanation
5 minutes

I will tell students that we will be doing a dance unit. I will


explain that today we will be learning the YMCA. Next, I will
put the students into two lines, facing me. I will explain that
they will do the steps the same way as I am. (Meaning if I
go to the right, the will go to the right - even if I am facing
them).

We will break it down into little sections and I will go around
and help students. We will try different sections with the
music.

What are the teachers/students doing?


We will do the whole dance together!

Assessment: I will assess students basic ability to move, their rhythm, and follow choreography.
I will assess this by watching students perform the dance throughout and at the end.
Modification: We will only learn half of the song if that is all that we get to.
Extra Activity: We will do the dance again or we will do some cool down stretches.

Steps:
*Warning - these steps are written down to make sense for Miss. Brown but it may not make sense to anyone
else*

- Start with finger pointing in the air. Hand on hip. Pop heel to the beat. Nod head. Change directions and
do the same with the other side of your body.
- On the music, bring your right hand down town by your side in a jazz hand, then your left.
- Shake both hands in a circle until they are above your head.
- On the music change, pump right fist twice over head then point to the right on beat. Music changes,
pump left fist twice over head then point to the left on beat. Repeat until music changes.
- On the beat, right hand to side, left hand to side, right hand above head, left hand above head. JAZZ
HANDS the whole time you bring your hands down slowly.
- On the music change, pump right fist twice over head then point to the right on beat. Music changes,
pump left fist twice over head then point to the left on beat. Repeat until music changes.
- On the beat, right hand to side, left hand to side, right hand above head, left hand above head. JAZZ
HANDS the whole time you bring your hands down.
- One two beats, jump straight up twice.
- Fist pump with both hands until chorus starts.
- YMCA (two jumps in between)
- nodding sprinkler move.
- repeat until chorus is done.
- On music change, two fist pumps on either side twice. Jump a quarter turn to the right. Repeat and
continue to quarter turn. *Front, left side, back*
- *Facing Back* On the beat, right hand to side, left hand to side, right hand above head, left hand above
head. JAZZ HANDS the whole time. *Note: while facing the back, do one set of fist pumping, then jazz
hands, then another set of fist pumping then quarter turn.
- *Still facing back* On music change, two fist pumps on either side twice. Jump a quarter turn to the
right. Repeat and continue to quarter turn.
- *Facing the front* On the beat, right hand to side, left hand to side, right hand above head, left hand
above head. JAZZ HANDS the whole time.
- One two beats, jump straight up twice.
- Fist pump with both hands until chorus starts.
- YMCA
- nodding sprinkler move.
- repeat until chorus is done.
- repeat quarter turning fist pumps
- repeat chorus
