Honeywell SLC INTELLIGENT CONTROL PANEL We Fire Alarm System Limitations While a fire alarm system may lower insurance rates, it is not a substitute for fire insurance! ‘An automate fire alarm system—typcally made up of smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual pull stations, aucible ‘warning devioss, and a fie alarm control panel with remote notficaton capablty—can provide early waming ofa develop Ing fre. Such a system, however, does not assure protection against property damage or loss of life resulting from a fr. “The Manufacturer recommends that smoke and/or heat dolac- tors be located throughout a protected premise following the recommendation ofthe National Fre Protection Association ‘Stanciara 72-2002 (NFPA 72-2002), manufacturer's recom- mendlatons, State and local codes, andthe recommendations ‘contained inthe Guides for Proper Use of System Smoke Detectors, which are made availabe at no charge to al install Ing dealers, These documents can be found at htp:/ wiv. gyetemsensor.convhimlappiat him. A study by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (an agency ofthe United States government) indicated that smoke detectors may not go off in as many as 35% of all fires. While fre alarm systoms are designed fo provide early waming against fre, they do not guarantee waming or protection against fire, A fre alarm system may not provide timely or adequate warning, or ‘simply may not function, fora variety of reasons: ‘Smoke detectors may not sense fre where smoke cannot reach the detectors such as in chimneys, In or behind walls, on roofs, or on the other side of closed doors. Smoke detectors also may not sense a fire on another level or floor ofa building. ‘A second-floor detector, for example, may not sense a first ‘oor or basement fe, Particles of combustion or “emoke” from a developing fre ‘may not reach the sensing chambers of smoke detectors. because + Barriers such as closed or pataly closed doors, walls, or chimneys may inhibit particle or smoke flow. + Smoke particles may become “cold,” stray, and not reach the celing or upper walls where detectors are located, + Smoke particles may be blown away from detectors by alr outles. + Smoke particles may be drawn into ar retums before reaching the detector ‘The amount of smoke" present may be insufficient to alarm ‘smoke detectors. Smoke detectors are designed to alarm at various levels of smoke density. If such density levels are not created by a developing fre at the location of detectors, the detectors will not go into alarm. ‘Smoke detectors, even when working propery, have sensing Imitations. Detectors that have photoslectronic sensing chambers tend to detect smoldering ies better than flaming fires, which have litte visible smoke. Detectors that have ion- izing-type sensing chambers tend to detect fast-aming res botter than smoldering fires. Because fies develop in diferent ways and are offen unpredictable in their growth, nether type of detector is necossarly best and a given type of detector may not provide adequate warning of a fre. ‘Smoke detectors cannot be expected to provide adequate \warning of res caused by arson, chidren playing with ‘matches (especial in bedrooms), smoking in bed, and violent ‘explosions (caused by escaping gas, improper storage of ‘flammable materials, et. Heat dotectors do not sense particles of combustion and alarm only when heaton ther sensors increases at a predeter- mined rate or reaches a predetermined level. Rate-ofise heat dotactors may be subject to reduced sensivty overtime, For this reason, the rate-o-so feature of each detector should be tested atleast once per year by a qualified fre pro- tection specialist. Heat detectors are designed to protect property, not ite IMPORTANT! Smoke datectors must be installed In the ‘same room as the control panel and in rooms used bythe tam forthe connection of alarm transmission wiring, communi- cation, signaling, andlor power. If detectors are not so located, a developing fe may damage the alarm system, crip pling Is ably to report a fire. ‘Audible warning devices such as bells may not alert people if these devices are located on the olher se of closed or patty open doors or are located on another floor of a bulling ‘Any warning device may fal to alert people witha disability or ‘hose who have recently consumed drugs, alcohol or meds tion. Please note that: + Strobes can, under certain circumstances, cause seizures in people with conditions such as epllepsy + Studios have shown that certain people, even when they hear fre alarm signal, do nat respond or comprehend the ‘meaning ofthe signal. tis the property owners respensi= billy to conduct fre dlls and other training exercise to ‘make people aware of fie alarm signals and instruct them fon the proper reaction to alarm signals, In rare instances, the sounding of a warning device can cause temporary or permanent heating oss. ‘A fire alarm system will nt operate without any electrical Powwer. IFAC power falls, the system will operate from standby batteries only fora specitied time and only ifthe bateries have been properly maintained and replaced regularly. Equipment used in the system may not be technicaly com- patie withthe control panel. Itis essential to use only equip- ment iste for service with your contol panel ‘Telophone lines needed to transmit alarm signals from a premise to a central monitoring station may be out of service for temporaly disabled. For adied protection against tel ‘Phone line failure, backup rao transmission systems are rec- ommended. ‘The most common cause of fre alarm malfunction is inade- quate maintenance. To keep the entre fre alarm eystem in, excellent working order, ongoing maintenance is required per the manufacturer's recommendations, and UL and NFPA stan- dards. Ata minimum, the requirements of NFPA 72-2002 shall be followed. Environments with arge amounts of dust, dt or high air velocity require more frequent maintenance. A main- ‘enance agreement should be arranged through the local man- Uufacture's representative. Maintenance should be scheduled monthly o a required by National andior local fre codes and should be performed by authorized professional fre alarm Installers only. Adequate written records of al inspections should be kept Honeywell SLC Wiring Manual Form Number 95-7675-9 PAN 51932:12. (2/62011, Installation Precautions Adherence to the following will aid in problem-free installation with long-term reliability: WARNING - Several different sources of power can be connected tothe fire alarm control panel. Disconnect all ‘sources of power before servicing. Control unit and assocl- ated equipment may be damaged by removing andor insert- Ing cards, module, or interconnecting cables wile the units energized. Do not attempt to instal, service, et operate tis ‘nit until manuals are read and understood, ‘CAUTION - System Re-acceptance Test ater Software ‘Changes: To ensure proper system operation, this product ‘must be tested in accordance with NFPA 72 ater any pro- ‘gramming operation or change in site-specific sofware. Re- acceptance testing is required after any change, alton or doleton of system components, or after any modification, repair or adjustment to system hardware or wing. ll compo- circuits, system operations, or sofware functions known tobe affected by a change must be 100% tested. In aciton, to ensure tat other operations are nt inadvertently affected, atleast 10% of iniiating devices that are not crecty affected by the change, up to-a maximum of 60 devices, must also be tested and proper system operation verified. ‘This system mosis NFPA requirements fr operation at 0.49" (6/82-120° F and ata relative humidity 93% 2% RH (non- condensing) at 32°C +2°C (80°F 43°F). However, he useful life of the system's stanaby batteries and the electronic com- ponents may be adversely affected by extreme temperature anges an humicty. Therefore itis recommended that this ‘system and its peripherals be installed in an environment with ‘a normal room temperature of 16-27° C/60-80" F.
