Fantasies of the job in relation to the rehabilitation aspect is for all athletes to be consistent with post-op
rehabilitation, in reality it does not happen. Many athletes start the process and choose to stop because of time
commitment, not being responsible, and disinterested. Another fantasy is to have the budget that is sufficient for
the needs of equipment in the athletic training room, in which there is not enough due to the fact that there are
other schools in the district to share that budget with. If we had all the rehabilitation equipment, joint braces, and
other tools we choose to have, our facilities would be much greater.

Master of Science in Health and Human Performance with concentration in Advanced Athletic Training
Accredited entry-level education programs include formal instruction in a variety of areas such as the following:
injury/illness prevention, First aid and emergency care, Assessment of injury/illness, Human Anatomy and
Physiology, Therapeutic Modalities and nutrition. Continuing Education requirements are meant to ensure that the
Certified Athletic Trainers stay current in the advancements in Athletic Training. Certified Athletic trainers are
educated, trained and evaluated in five major practice domains:
1. Prevention
2. Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis
3. Immediate and Emergency Care
4. Treatment and Rehabilitation
5. Organization and Professional Health and Well-Being
3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.

Day to day activities start bright and early. We have morning treatment for injured athletes starting at 6:30a.m.
before school. Throughout the day, there are athletic periods first and second, and fourth through seventh, leaving
third period off as a conference period. We see about 75 female/male athletes daily from knee/shoulder injuries,

muscle tightness, scrapes and contusions. Every injured athlete is treated once or twice a day on a daily basis until
cleared for participation. During third period, that give us time to recharge from the busy morning hours and catch
up on documentation, parent calls and emails. After school lets out, we start field/gym set up for practices or
games. At the end of the day, we end with practice/game clean up and are the last to leave at dark and start over
the next day.
4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?

At this time, with Houston Methodist buying out CHRISTUS St. John, there has been changes. Slowly, different
requirements are taking place. As of now, my job is secured. I foresee good change in the near future outreaching
to more high schools in this area that are in need of Athletic Trainers.

According to a salary survey done by the National Athletic Trainers Association in 2011, the national average
salary for a full-time AT position is $51,483.
6. What potential for growth is there in your field?

Information from myFuture Historical Job Growth states that employment of athletic trainers is projected to grow
21 percent from 2012 to 2022. That is faster than the average for all occupations. This occupation is small, but the
fast growth will result in only about 4,900 new jobs over the next 10-year period. More and more athletic trainers
are being recognized in the news media, newspapers, and in the professional level. This is making more people
aware of sports-related injuries at a young age. With more demand for athletic trainers, growth is expected to
increase, more significantly in colleges, universities, and also youth leagues.

7. Are you happy with this career field that youve chosen?
Yes, I am happy with this career that I have chosen.
8. If you could choose another career, what would it be and why?
I would choose Physical therapy. I would still be helping others through rehabilitation and getting them
Back to their daily activities or sport. It is also a job with consistent business hours rather than longer
Hours covering games and practices in athletic training.
9. Who would you recommend this particular career field to?
I would recommend this career to those who are interested in the medical field and enjoy being around
sports.
10. Could you see yourself working in this career field all the way to retirement?

Yes. I can see myself being an athletic trainer until I retire. I worked extremely hard to get here
and mainly because this is what I love to do.
