LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Express a given problem as an equation in which a symbol is used to represent an unknown number (grade 4)
2. Express a given problem as an equation in which a letter variable is used to represent an unknown number
(limited to whole numbers) (grade 5)

ASSESSMENTS
Observations:

Students understand the concept of x as an unknown number variable

Students can solve for the letter number variable
Grade 5 only students can create an equation using a letter number variable to
express a problem.
Can the students solve for X?
Can students reach the determined solution in their own way?
(Grade 5) Can the students represent a problem using a letter numbered
equation?

Prepare SMART Board lesson

Introduction
Are you guys ready to show off your creations on algebra? Well do a quick
review first, then we will present your creations to the class.
Lets review quickly. How many of you remember solving equations with a
letter variable? How do fins the number when it is adding? What about
subtraction? Multiplication? Division?
Students will listen and be active during discussions and work quietly
during their projects.

Time
5 min.

Have SMART Board presentation prepared

Lets do a quick review first.
Body
Review
Use SMART Board to go over concepts covered.
Starting with addition, the presentation moves through
subtraction, multiplication and division.
Final Project - Creative
Students will have created either a:
o Poem
o Picture
o Story
o Other media-type presentation in and 8.5 X 11 size
This creation must include:
o Algebra: an equation, an answer to the equation, and how
the student got the answer.
o A question for the audience to answer (also algebra)
o Use at least three different colors
o Be easy to read and carefully written
o Have their name on the BACK of their project
Students will present their projects one at a time, explaining to the
class what the project is and how it relates to algebra and math.

Assessments/ Differentiation

Assessment of Learning:

Feedback From Students:

Feedback To Students

Assessment will be based on:

o The quality of production (time spent, use of color and
space)
o How relevant the project is to algebra and math
No third activity
No assessment
Closure
Do students understand the concept of variable letter numbers?
Do students stay focused and work quickly?
Are students focused and working on their green books?
Now you know about basic algebra. This skill is a key skill to most of math
in life and higher grades. Do you have any questions?
You worked really hard today, well done! It really looks like you are
getting the hang of this! Ive really enjoyed working with you guys and I
hope you continue to work hard and try your best for the rest of the school
year! *more specific comments will be based upon actual in-class
performance.
