Fendering
We bring the benefit of significant marine and operational expertise to all
our fender customers, working with them to ensure that they obtain the
best-fit, best value product to suit their fendering needs. The business of
Fendercare Marine was built on our ability to provide best in class fendering
solutions to our clients. We are not just a trading house, looking to sell
fenders on with a margin we are also, via our ship-to-ship transfer division,
the worlds largest operator of genuine Yokohama-brand pneumatic
fenders. To put it simply, we wouldnt stake our STS reputation on any other
brand of pneumatic fender.
These fenders are ideal for short-term port calls or one-off berthings;
interim fendering during construction or maintenance work; transfer
of cargoes at sea; buoyancy aids; providing vessel stand-off or
double berthing requirements. Additional fenders are provided to
naval specifications.
Our through-life support package involves not only swift and efficient
sale of new fenders, but also rental, hire purchase and repair/refurbishment
services. Highly trained staff at each of the bases in our global network are
able either to receive your damaged fenders for repair at our premises or to
travel to your site to undertake repair or refurbishment work on pneumatic
or foam filled fenders.
In addition to Yokohama floating fenders, we are now able to offer our
own brand of Hippo floating foam fenders along with a broad range of fixed
fenders and vessel fendering systems.
Our portfolio of fendering solutions can be summarised as:
Yokohama pneumatic and hydro-pneumatic fenders
Hippo floating foam fenders and donut fenders
multi-purpose fenders for dockside or vessel-side installation
Hippo vessel fendering systems
fixed fendering systems

Yokohama Floating Fenders
Pneumatic 50/80
Yokohama began manufacturing floating pneumatic fenders in 1958.
Since then, more than 60,000 Yokohama fenders have been supplied into
ship-to-quay and ship-to-ship applications worldwide. Put quite simply,
over the course of the past half-century more people have put their faith
in Yokohama fenders than in any other brand of pneumatic fender.
And that faith has been justified by the durability and longevity of the
fenders providing an outstanding return on the investment which their
owners have made in them.
ISO 17357 is now firmly established within the marine industry as the
international standard for the manufacture, testing and performance of
pneumatic rubber fenders.
Over the years Fendercare Marine has discovered that although other
manufacturers may be claiming full compliance to ISO 17357, it can be
demonstrated that in certain cases irregularities have been found where
fenders that have been supplied as compliant do not in fact comply with
the standard in one or more of the following criteria:
incomplete material tests
hydrostatic pressure test wrongly conducted or failed
incorrect evaluation of angular and durability tests
incorrect reinforcement material used
rubber specifications not meeting ISO 17357 requirements
certificates out of date or non-existent
Drawings and picture references are for illustration purposes only.

Advantages
Safe for excess load
The reaction force of a floating pneumatic fender does not increase sharply
even under excess load. Therefore, these fenders perform extremely well
under such conditions and, as a result, protect ships and mooring facilities.
No deterioration or variation in performance
Because pneumatic fenders use the compressive elasticity of air, there
is no performance deterioration due to fatigue. The performance of
these fenders remains unchanged at extremely low temperatures,
even below -50C.
Safety and reliability
Yokohama pneumatic rubber fenders are constructed using several layers
of strong tyre cord and are therefore extremely resistant to pressure and
cutting. The larger sizes (2.5m dia upward) are fitted with a safety valve to
prevent accidents in the event of over compression.
Construction
The fender body is constructed of an inner rubber layer, reinforcing cord
layers and an outer rubber layer. All of these layers are vulcanised together
and then proven by hydraulic pressure test.
The outer skin rubber compound is designed and manufactured to be
able to withstand both strenuous use including abrasion during adverse
weather conditions whilst protecting the cord layers and inner rubber.
The synthetic tyre cord layers are arranged at optimum angles designed
to distribute load and stress evenly. The inner rubber compound is
designed to be completely airtight, utilising a compound equivalent to
that of an inner tube of a car tyre.
To provide maximum strength and safety, the outer skin of a
hydro-pneumatic fender is thicker than a normal surface fender.

Floating Pneumatic
Submarine Fenders
In order to provide full protection at surface and subsurface, Yokohama
pneumatic submarine fenders are deployed vertically. To maintain their
position, the fenders are water ballasted and also have a counterweight
attached to the bottom of the fender. The weight, shape and method
of deployment of the counterweight can be adjusted to suit individual
situations.
Fendercare Marine has supplied Yokohama submarine fenders to many
navies around the world, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Greece, Japan,
the United Kingdom and the USA.
Advantages
The Yokohama submarine fender was launched in 1984, since then it has
been extensively used by navies across the world. Advantages of fenders
over alternative, traditional berthing methods include:
use as a cost effective replacement for deep water catamarans
easily moved to provide flexibility in berthing
easily transported to provide emergency berthing facilities
maintenance requirement almost non-existent
unaffected by extreme climatic conditions

Construction
The fender body is constructed from a rubber inner core with a non
magnetic metal mouthpiece at both ends. A grey rubber outer skin with a
minimum of two plies of tyre cord layers, also coated with rubber, protects
the inner core. The fenders can therefore be used on mine
counter-measure vessels.

Floating Fenders
A PT1/8 air valve is fitted at the end of the fender to allow access for
inflation whilst ensuring maximum protection from damage during
normal use.
Application
Vessels carry the fenders onboard with them at all times, for use both
at home, at sea and in foreign ports as utility fenders. The fenders are
used primarily for two applications ship-to-quay and ship-to-ship. For
ship-to-quay application the fenders are used to berth a vessel alongside a
quay or wharf. For ship-to-ship application the fenders are used to berth or
moor two vessels side by side (double-banking) in port or at sea.
There are three main configurations for fender grouping when in use:
Mooring positions of the fender groups on the ship should keep the ship
separated and stable at the same distance from the quay or another ship
all along the parallel mid-body.
Berthing against a quay or a stable ship moored in port is straightforward
but the following should be considered when confirming fender size: (1) the
approaching ships docking speed, (2) approaching angle, (3) hull shape,
(4) protrusion from ship and (5) equipment fitted on the hull.
It should be carefully noted that required stand-off distance is an important
variable to consider when berthing. For example, if a vessel is light in weight
but requires a stand-off of 2 metres (due to large flare or parts/equipment
standing proud of the hull such as a stabiliser) then larger fenders would
be required.
Quay, or another vessel of
similar size in more stable or
moored condition (can also
carry fenders on this side)

Fender Systems
Hippo Vessel Fendering Systems
Hippo Vessel Fendering Systems are extremely lightweight but very
durable foam elastomer fendering systems which are typically bonded to
the hulls of vessels but can also be mechanically fixed if so required.
The inside of the fender is made of elastic polyethylene foam, which
provides the energy absorption. This core is then coated in protective
marine-grade polyurethane (PU), either via a spraying or moulding process.
Depending upon the application, we can vary the materials we use
(i.e. the density of the foam, the material properties of the PU and the
mesh reinforcement system) to provide the ideal combination for each
specific project.
We are now, uniquely able to incorporate Kevlar reinforcement into the
PU skin of our fenders to give an outstanding level of durability, particularly
where high-wear areas have been identified.
Typical users
Anyone who is designing, building or operating a vessel where there is
a definite requirement for the fendering to be extremely light, to look
extremely good, or both.

Fendering
Fender Systems
Why specify?
The alternatives to foam elastomer technology are rubber fenders, inflatable
tubes, ionomer foam and hypalon foam.
We believe that Hippo Fendering offers the following benefits over
these technologies:
it is ultra-light compared to rubber fendering (from 3kg/m), therefore
minimising hull weight and boosting vessel performance in projects where speed
and mobility are vital
i t will not puncture or lose pressure in the way that inflatable RIB collars can, so is
ideal in situations where pneumatic collars are perceived to represent too much
of an operational risk
it potentially offers better energy absorption properties and lower transfer
of loads to the hull than ionomer type fendering (depending upon the
application-driven combination of materials we decide upon)
it presents very little risk of permanent shrinkage and offers very high tear
resistance as opposed to the hypalon/foam systems which can remain
permanently deformed following collision and which are relatively easily torn

Our experience
Hippo Marine has been working with designers and boatyards
internationally on both leisure and commercial fendering projects for
well over a decade. We have more experience of doing this type of work in
these materials than anyone else in the world.
The niche nature of our fendering technology has allowed our customer
base to extend out from our UK manufacturing facility into Europe and then
further afield. We now supply and support our fendering systems in all the
major boat-building markets, from North America to Australasia and most
places inbetween.
Unique construction
Each boat we work on is different so each fendering project takes its own
unique path, whether it is for a one-off custom yacht tender or an ongoing
series of patrol vessels. Because of the almost infinite flexibility of our
technology we are not restricted to offering a small number of off-the-shelf
possibilities. We are in the very happy position of being able to offer a
blank-page approach to our customers and to draw upon our experience
to jointly develop the fendering specification and arrangement which best
suits your operational requirements.
Our starting point is a drawing of the hull, an approximate profile size which
is being sought and an understanding of the operational role of the boat.
Given this information we select the optimum combination of materials
and then provide an initial proposal for the supply of a suitable set of Hippo
fendering. This is then invariably modified over the course of the project
as the design criteria change, until the most suitable fendering solution is
ultimately arrived at and agreed by all parties at which point we move
to manufacture.
However, our work in taking our customers through the process from start
to finish does not stop there. We can also recommend or supply suitable
adhesives and primers, and we pride ourselves on offering comprehensive
fitting instructions and installation support to our customers as required to
ensure that the end result is to their and their end-users entire satisfaction.

Fendering
Leg Fender
The leg fender provides a compact solution to mounting
fenders in limited areas. Our fenders have a narrower
footprint than traditional leg fenders and can be
mounted behind a panel or pile. Leg fenders can also
be used with a UHMW-PE shield to provide a low cost
alternative to an arch fender.

Portable DockAlert
The Portable DockAlert system is a portable tool for use in a nonhazardous area of a jetty that allows monitoring and logging of the
speed of approach and impact speed of a vessel onto the fenders. It
is ideal for terminals that need temporary monitoring (while a jetty
that has sustained damaged is undergoing repairs, for example),
to carry out tests to determine the speeds that vessels are coming
in at, to comply with local regulations or to assess if a permanent
system is required. It is also perfect for terminals that have multiple
berth facilities, where a fixed system would not be suitable.
There are two systems available: Long Range and Hi-accuracy.
The long range system is a general purpose system with a range
of 0-300m, while the hi-accuracy system is designed for use over
0-60m, but with increased accuracy (1.5mm) and resolution
(1mm), so that the final impact speed of the vessel can be closely
monitored at this critical time.
Both systems comprise a laser vessel approach sensor connected
to a portable computer running pre-installed Strainstall DockAlert
PDS software. The system is powered from a battery mounted in a
rugged carry case providing up to 4 hours operation.
Portable DockAlert System Benefits:
Cost effective temporary system that protects jetty infrastructure
Improves safety
Can be used for testing/analysis purposes
Event logging to provide historical information
Ensures compliance with local regulations
Fast deployment on multiple berth terminals
Scope of Supply:
In carry case
Laser sensor with sighting device
Rugged portable computer with DockAlert ODS software installed
12V 10Ahr rechargeable battery and charger
Data and mains cable
In carry bag
Height adjustable tripod with 3-way adjustable head

Mooring
MoorAlert:
Provides an accurate indication of mooring loads in multi-line
mooring spreads and enables each mooring line to be pretensioned according to each vessels individual mooring scheme.
These loads are measured by strain gauged load measuring pins
installed in the quick release mooring hooks. Provides alarms
should tensions exceed pre-set limits.
Benefits:
Maintains safe and efficient mooring line tension
Ensures safety of personnel whilst vessel is moored
Protects jetty equipment and infrastructure

Flotation
We offer a best-in-class solution to just about any surface or subsurface
buoyancy requirement from customers throughout the world. If we cannot
meet a requirement from our extensive range of off the shelf products, we
apply our experience and engineering expertise to design a new solution.
In addition, with the recent acquisition of a leading firm of naval architects,
we have now added mooring system design to our bespoke product
design capability.
Steel has been the material of choice for surface buoyancy applications
for many decades and we still offer steel buoys to those customers who
prefer them.
However, for more than 20 years, there has been a shift away from the
significant capital and labour costs involved in building, deploying
and maintaining steel products. The growing preference is for modern,
lightweight, low-maintenance forms of plastic buoyancy.
Within the Fendercare Marine group of companies, we have two
designers and manufacturers of plastic buoyancy, both serving a global
customer base.
Australian Commercial Marine (ACM) has a long-established and
market-leading range of mooring and navigational buoys manufactured
from rotationally-moulded polyethylene. They have harnessed a unique
foam sandwich variant of this technology, to offer buoys with outstanding
collision-absorption properties. Others may seek to emulate them, but
there is only one genuine range of ACM buoys.
Hippo Marine is a world-renowned UK-based manufacturer of
elastomer-type buoys, the same technology that they use in foam-filled
fendering solutions. This results in self-fendering surface buoys which are
specifically designed to absorb impacts without either suffering or causing
damage, making them the preferred choice for offshore operations.
We can also introduce Kevlar reinforcement into the elastomer skin of
the products to offer outstanding durability for heavy-duty work.
We have also recently developed a subsurface buoyancy capability in
a product line now being delivered to offshore and governmental
customers worldwide.
Our product range covers four main product areas:
mooring buoys
navigational buoys
offshore surface buoys
subsurface flotation

Applications
The primary product applications for these materials are:
The Materials
transponder collars
Based upon the use our products are being put to and
the depths to which they need to be rated, we select from
a number of possible material combinations to ensure
maximum product life and integrity at minimum cost.
Foams
For shallower depths, we are typically offering either
high-density polyethylene foam or expanded polymer
foam. The significant benefit both these foams offer
over the polyurethane foam, which most other
manufacturers will offer for these depths, is that the
foams we offer are of a closed cell nature. This means
that if the outer skin of a Hippo shallow water buoy is
breached, our customers can be assured that the result
will not be a rapid and catastrophic absorption of water
followed by failure of the product.
For deepwater applications, we are formulating and
processing our own pure syntactic foam into which we
will then generally introduce moulded macrospheres to
reduce the weight and the ultimate cost of the product.

An environmentally
friendly and cost
effective alternative
to dry blasting and
pressure washing
Surface Preparation
Meeting todays needs for surface coating removal
and preparation
Blastgreen wet blast machines can remove almost any substance from
any surface without the use of chemicals or toxic abrasives. Using a
combination of water and pure natural abrasives, delivered at pressures
as low as 2.5 bar, Blastgreen machines are ideal for a wide variety of
applications, giving total flexibility for cleaning of almost any surface.
Environmentally Friendly
Our green credentials stem not only from our recommending naturally
occurring, environmentally safe and silica-free blast media, Olivine
and 'Garnet' ; but also from our machines ability to greatly reduce dust,
destructive rebounding and the problematic and costly matter of waste
disposal.
Improving efficiency, reducing waste and limiting required resources also
dictates how green a product is. The reduced volumes of abrasive used in
our machines yield savings in material handling, transport, clean up and
disposal. One cannot overstate the value of dust containment when it
comes to protecting equipment, personnel and the environment. Using
our low pressure wet blasting machines will greatly reduce the harmful and
destructive effects caused by more conventional blasting.
We currently have machines working in:
offshore
stainless steel
other metals
building restoration
concrete
engineering
brick
surface preparation
industrial cleaning
wood
graffiti removal
underwater environments
Our range of equipment has been designed to suit a wide variety of industries and applications and are available for
contract hire or purchase from stock. All machines have a 12 month manufacturers warranty on parts and labour
and are provided with comprehensive operations and maintenance manuals. All machines and equipment comply
with HSE Risk Assessments.
