Drug Testing Welfare Recipients

I would like to express my views concerning the drug testing of welfare recipients. The
policy will take effect in 2015. It was voted on and approved, in both the House of
Representative and the Michigan Senate. I think this policy discriminates against the poor. No
other class of people has to go through a drug test screening in order to receive benefits. The
State will launch a one year pilot programs and the estimated cost is between $500,000 and
750,000. After careful research it was found that at least eleven states have passed legislation
regarding drug testing or screening for public assistance applicants or recipients. I also found out
that the cost of drug testing the recipients far outweighed the money saved in catching those
persons who were abusing drugs. Many of the states are reconsidering whether or no they will
continue with the drug testing program. In the state of Florida this policy was struck down by the
Supreme Court and was deemed as unconstitutional. In the state of Florida this policy was

the poor is not only discriminative but also unconstitutional.
