Warm-Up:
Review of Serial

Ss write down one detail (key word, key person, something important that
happened) they remember from the listening HW. T collects the details and
distributes them randomly to the Ss. Ss are each given time to look at the detail
they were given. The Ss will share everything they know about that detail with
the class. The WC will fact check each presentation, correcting the speaker
whenever they are wrong or helping them if they did not catch that detail in the
listening.

4.1.2 Ss will discuss the video they watched in the previous class (about
WC
undecided voters in the midterm elections). They will tell the Ss who missed the
first showing of the video what it was about. There will be a quick review of the
midterm elections and why they are important in the U.S.

5 min

T will ask Ss to discuss everything that happened in the second listening that
was not covered in the activity.
Linking & Transitioning to rest of lesson:
The plot thickens! You will get more information about Adnan and Haes
relationship and break up tonight, but lets go back to what we started at the end
of last class. What did we do at the end of class on Monday?

Activity 1:
Body Language

Pre-Stage:
4.1.1 Ss will discuss the main points about body language that we went over in
the previous class. The Qs from the paragraph about body language will be put
back on the screen and the Ss will say their answers again. Ss will be asked
about their opinions on body language/facial expressions and how those differ
from gestures
-Are they different? Why or why not?

During Stage:
4.2.1 Since the midterm elections are over, Ss will discuss some political issues
that they think were important in the midterm elections. Ss will write these
issues on the board. Ss will be paired and will have to discuss why they think
they are important. Ss will share ideas with the class. Some issues to write if
the Ss do not come up with enough (these will be the issues that they write
about for their interview scene:

-environment/agriculture
-party loyalty
-healthcare/Obamacare
-taxes/income
-federal budget/balancing the budget
-immigration
4.2.2 Ss will watch video of undecided voters, taking notes on the chart the T
provides. Video will be paused after each speaker. Clip will be played again so
that the Ss can double check their answers and fill in anything they missed. Ss
check their charts with partner and answer Qs about facial expressions/body
language. WC goes over answers.

2.1.2 T tells Ss that today we are going to do a mini-lesson on comma usage in T-Ss
English. Tell Ss that even English L1 writers struggle with commas, so its okay
if they have trouble. Using commas correctly can make your writing easier to
read, and boost your writing credibility at work, etc.

2 min

*If we are running short on time, we will only play the video once

Transition to #2: We
will send you your
videos tonight, and for
HW for over the
weekend, we are
going to have you
watch your
interview and fill
out a self-observation
worksheet. This is to
help you see how you
use body language
and how you can
improve. Remember,
it will help with your
spoken fluency and
accuracy!

Activity 2:
Comma Mini lesson

Follow-up: Ss will begin the post-stage activity if they finish answering the Qs
before the other group.
Post-Stage:
4.3.1 With their partners, Ss script their own interview, mimicking the
interviews from the video. Ss will prepare a short scene (about 2 min) that will
be acted out for the class and will be filmed so that they can see themselves and
the gestures that they use. Their scene will be about a political issue from the
list on the board.
4.3.2 Ss will be given time to write and practice their interview. The Ss will
be sent their recorded video and will fill out a self-observation worksheet for
HW. They will also be given a rubric to grade their oral presentations If we
run out of time, we will do the presentations/filming on Thursday.
Tangible Outcome/T. feedback/peer feedback:
Summaries of reading, feedback on summaries, answer to Qs, chart for video,
script, performance of script, T notes on errors, recordings of Ss

Pre-Stage:
2.1.1 T writes a comma on the board and elicits S reactions to that type of
punctuation. T asks Ss how they feel about commas, if they use them in their
L1, if they find them easy/difficult to use, if they are used differently in their
L1/L2.

During Stage:
2.2.1 T tells Ss that they are going to watch a TedEd video that was made about T-Ss
commas. They should watch the video and try to fill in information on their
worksheet while they watch.

2 min

2.2.2. Ss watch TedEd video: A Comma Story

5 min

2.2.3 Ss review their worksheet answers with a partner. Ts answers any

questions that Ss might have, replay any parts of the video that they might want
to see.

S-S

2.2.4. Ss complete a worksheet to add commas to sentences.

Transition to #3:
Now that weve
reviewed commas, we
hope that you can try
to become more aware
of their usage when
youre writing. Now
to reviewing the test!

Post-Stage:
2.3.1 Ss complete a free write about the best and worst things about NYC. Tells
Ss that they are going to switch papers afterwards so that they can look for
S
comma usage.

2.3.2 Ss switch papers and highlight correct/incorrect comma usage.

Tangible Outcome & T. feedback/peer feedback: Comma worksheet, in-class

Wrap-up
Reviewing Unit 3 Test Ts will pass back Unit 3 tests for Ss to review. Ts will answer Qs the Ss have.

Materials: PPT slides, textbook, Undecided Voter clip, chart/questions for video, self-observation worksheet, TedEd comma
video, comma worksheets
Anticipated Problems & Suggested Solutions: Ss may be wary about being videotaped. We will offer to film them on their
own cameras. We have already gotten consent from them, but this would be an option to put them more at ease since we
wouldnt have the recordings.
Contingency Plans (what you will do if you finish early, etc.): If we finish early, we will spend more time going over the
test. We will also do some preview exercises for the next section of the listening HW.
