Progress Report

Below, I discuss the status of my progress with my inquiry into disciplinarity project.
Introduction
Nursing is a profession within the health care sector concentrated mainly on the care of
individuals, families, and communities, hence they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal
health and quality of life. Therefore, I am conducting this research in order to inquire, What is
process I must follow in order to become an active and successful nurse of the discourse
community? Afterwards, the previous primary question will create more inquiries that will be
covered within several secondary research questions, which will be the following:
1. How many time will it take me to get a nursing degree?
2. How am I going to prepare for the work-field?
3. What will be the cost of my nursing education?
4. Will I be able to control all the study I have to go through?
5. What will be the tools I am going to need during nursing school?
6. How will I relate to patients and treat them adequately?
7. What if I do not get accepted into the nursing program?
Research Methods
My research methods include interviewing, surveying, site observation, and document analyses.
Interview(s)
To being with, I have created 10 question, which in my perspective are substantial and important
for the research. This process is still in process. The following questions will be implemented in
the interview, since I am planning to interview several individuals connected to the nursing field,
which in this case will be nursing students, faculty, and professionals.

The only interview I have conducted until now is to a freshmen nursing prospectus student, who
is currently attending UTEP as a Pre-nursing student. Jacquelyn Olivares. On October 25th, 2014,
at 2:30 PM in the Union at UTEP.
Then, on October 27th, 2014, from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM, I plan to interview staff within the
nursing college building. I plan to interview professor of Pathophysiology, Melvin W
Farnsworth, about his opinion of the nursing program at the Campbell building.
Moreover, on October 29th, 2014, I plan to execute interviews with random people in the nursing
facility, aiming for all level undergraduate students (freshmen- senior) and probably graduate
students.
I am actually worried about the completion of this research method on time, because the faculty I
have assigned to interview have really difficult schedules to work with. So, I am just hoping
there will be no adversities or obstacles whatsoever.
Survey(s)
First of all, the survey contains 10 questions in a variety of formats. It is composed of 4 multiplechoice questions, single selection. A multiple-choice question, with multiple selections. Then, an
opened-ended question. Afterwards, a ranking question, a list of 10 items, to rank them from 110. Followed by an opened-ended question with three respective boxes to write the answer on.
Finally, two questions to rate some aspects from the nursing program. This particular research
method is still in process to be completed. The number of answer I have obtained in total is five.
I want to obtain more than 20 people answering, therefore I will be able to provide a significant
analysis of the results. I created an online formatting in the page
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/M7NMVWF. I decided to perform the surveys in an
anonymous form, where the surveyed individuals do not have to provide their names. The
nursing practitioners just need to copy and paste the link into the web address, anytime they
want. I distributed the link of the survey within the nursing college and to some nursing
classmates on October 24th, 2014 at 2:00 PM.
I am very confident on my ability to complete the research method on the date established, and
even before. The participants are contributing to the survey in a positive manner.
Site Observation(s)
The site observations are completed. I attended diverse environments, in which nurses can be
observed. So, I could acquire a more extensive gamma of the circumstances, attitudes, and
actions demonstrated by nurses. The places included in the site observations were the
Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, on October 14th, 2014, from 4:00 PM to 4:45 PM, which
contributed an international perspective about the nursing discipline. I visited Las Palmas
Hospital in the pediatrics sector, on October 16th, 2014, from 5:00 PM to 5:30 PM, where I was
able to identify the rigorous pressure and work to which nursing professionals are summited to.
Lastly, I went to the College of Nursing classroom on October 17th, 2014, from 9:00 AM to 9:40

PM, in which I scrutinized the school environment and behaviors shown by students. I usually
just sat in a chair to conduct the site observation, and every so often I would examined the
territory and population within the place.
The research method of the site observations is already completed. So, I am extremely confident
about my ability to finish before the established date.

Nursing degree plan- The function of the nursing degree plan is to provide guidance to students,
and facilitate the school path they need to go through. It basically intends to aid people to choose
the correct, or more beneficial courses for them in order to acquire a nursing degree.
Describe your level of confidence regarding your ability to have this research method completed
by the date you established in your project plan.
Nursing center (Website) It was created to provide substantial investigations on the nursing
discourse community. It carefully analyzes fundamental components that compose this complex
and complicated career, before and after you obtain a degree. Besides, it was founded to
contribute valuable advises and tips for current and future nursing students.
Institution and program description documents - The functions of the document are to
provide a detailed explanation of UTEPs history. Inform students about program opportunities
and an overview. Provide an environment where students would feel more identified and related
the institution and programs as well. Also, it was created to explain the requirements people need
to possess in order to be accepted into the programs.
Course syllabi (NURS 3604) - The function of the course syllabus is to give an overview to the
student about the assignment that will need to be turned it. It also helps the student to
comprehend the material of the course in a deeper sense. Besides, it provides some perspective of
what the professor will be expecting from the student.
Conclusion
It is my conviction that I will be able to complete the research project on time, due to the hardwork and organization I have done. The only obstacle I have suffered is the sudden due dates of
some assignments. Furthermore, I believe there will be some difficulties in the interview process
as I said before, because the schedules are just too tight. Finally, I have turned in all my
assignments before the deadline, which I think reinforces my commitment to the research
project.
