University of the Cordilleras Who Aspire To Be
Musicians By Timothy John Cacho and Alice Angiwan CITCS - 2B / MWF / 8:55 - 10:20 I. INTRODUCTION a) Definition b) Why do people do it? c) Law / Punishment d) methodology To gather the desired information, the researchers have created two sets of questionnaires which were distributed to the respondents. Set A, consisting of 5 questions, was requested to be answered by aspiring musicians while Set B contained 4 questions and was intended for professional musicians. 20 copies were printed for Set A and 5 for the second set. Please refer to the attached copies of the survey questionnaires at page .... II. RESULT a) Aspiring Musicians The survey was participated by a total number of 20 students. The summary and analysis of the results are presented in the following. 1. In what field of music are you mostly interested in? For the first question, only three out of the five given choices were chosen by the respondents : a)composer, b)instrumentalist and c)songwriter. Most aspire to be successful instrumentalists, as proven by the rate of 10 over 20 students choosing this field. It is then followed by the field composer which scored 8 out of 20. Lastly, 6 students wanted to be songwriters. The choices d)producer and e)teacher/instructor were scrapped out. 2. What genre are you mostly interested in? There are 15 genres provided in the survey. Most students noted more than one answer, but which had the greatest mark was Acoustic. While the Acoustic genre gained 12 marks, Pop and OPM tie up for the second place with a result of 7. Reggae, Jazz and Rock also land in the third place with a number of 5 marks. 3. What makes you become a music enthusiast? As the researchers went through each paper, two common answers appear. What makes these aspiring musicians to be music enthusiasts are because of their passion or interest, and because of the influence of family, relatives and friends. 4. Who or what inspired you? For the fourth question, most of the participants mentioned names of their idols or role models in music such as solo artists, bands and of course their family or friends. Two have answered however that it is music itself that inspires them to pursue music.
5. What is your stand against music piracy?
The last question aims to discover the awareness of the chosen students on music piracy and ask them of their thoughts about it. Basing from their responses, the researchers have noted that 15 are informed on what music piracy is. Of the remaining 5 students, some have admitted that they do not know about it, and the rest answered in a manner that does not have any relation or connection about the specified topic. Of the students' opinion about music piracy, the survey showed that most of them disagree or stand against it. 12 have strongly opposed to this act. But 4 from the group, although they have concluded that piracy is unfair to any musician, have said that there are certain advantages behind it, such as being able to enjoy music at lesser costs and piracy being an instrument for artists to gain more popularity. Four more students have failed to give any opinion or express their ideas and gave invalid, nonsensible answers unfortunately. b) Professional Musicians Only 5 professional musicians have answered our questionnaires, as they were the only available respondents within the given timeframe for the activity. Aside from knowing who aspiring musicians are, the researchers included professional musicians in the survey to see and compare some of the ideas between near/future and already musicians. 1. In what field are you mostly inclined to? The respondents of Set B have given the following answers: a)composer, b)instrumentalist, c)songwriter and f)singer. Most of them are inclined in more than 1 field or more than one instrument as instrumentalists. Drums, guitar, piano, flute and bass were mentioned for field b. Two have answered that they were both instrumentalists as well as singers, another 2 have said they were specializing in instruments and one was talented in all 4 fields. 2. Where did your inspiration come from? Common to the compiled responses from Set A, passion, other international/local artists and family serve as the inspiration of musicians. 3. What makes you perform/write/teach music? What drives them to perform and write music is because of their need to express feelings, the spirit of sharing or helping others through music and it becoming a source of income. 4. What genre do you play/teach/write? All of the surveyed musicians noted that all of them are into a variety of genres. Country, folk, rock, reggae, jazz, blues, acoustic are generated from the questionnaires.
III. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
Finally, from the tally of answers and analysis of the research
and survey the researchers have conducted, they can now affirm the
level of awareness of the aspiring student musicians. The following
information which were gathered enable them to conclude that nearfuture musicians are aware of the issues that surround a professional artist/musician. It is also clear that they oppose it, and want to strengthen measures to stop it. Other thoughts are also presented, however, such as the advantages or benefits of this issue, like how piracy allows people to enjoy music through cheaper costs and how it could even promote an artist because people could listen to their music without much difficulties. From this, it could be told that some people see music as a general property, or something that should be free and shared that is why piracy is not a terrible issue. The researchers could also conclude that all musicians, professional or aspiring, when it comes to what drives them to play or write music have the same reasons. Family/friends and their love for music make them what they are.
