Studies done that supports proper oral hygiene can prevent occurrence of cavities and other
associated problems with the oral cavity
Possible Outcomes for health teaching:
Children will understand the importance of good oral care and practice proper oral care in
their daily lives.
Interventions Planned for teaching (games, teaching, handouts, etc.):
Show how to floss with blocks, brush teeth own in the class and have pink dye that allows
them to visualize plaque that was missed, prepare handout for children and their parents to
review together when children go back their home.
Evidence- based sources for teaching:
Children with poorer oral health status were more likely to experience dental pain, miss
school, and perform poorly in school. These findings suggest that improving children's oral
health status may be a vehicle to enhancing their educational experience.[

INTRO

Hi were Sun and Natalie and we are nursing students. Anyone here know what a
nurse is? (they take care of people, want to keep people healthy)
Were here to talk about keeping your mouth clean and if theyre good have a
treat for them

what happens when dont take care of teeth
- can get cavities which are
- toothaches that cause you to not want to eat. Which could result in not getting
proper nutrition
- problems happen when dont brush and floss 2x a day or always eating candy and
drinking soda

-DO: brush 2x/day, floss, eat healthy
-DONT: drink soda, eat excessive candy, use worn out tooth brushes

SUMMARY OF PRESENTATION TO KIDS

Asked what makes up oral cavity, able to answer teeth, tongue, gums, lips. One girl
answered have 20 teeth. Told how they loose teeth and get adult ones
We explain how to brush teeth and flossing (2x day to brush and 1x day to floss). Some
said they do it them selves, some need help
Activity with pink dye on couple students to show left over areas they missed. They
actually brushed teeth with new toothbrush and toothpaste then rinse. SOME SAID
FIRST TIME BRUSHING TEETH ON THEIR OWN. SOME SAID IT WAS FUN.
Talked what happens when dont brush. Plaque buildup, what cavities do, and what they
can cause (nutrition, toothache). When asked what cavities are they said a hole, food in
the teeth
Dos and Dont questions: soda? Candy? Brush 2x? floss? Toothbrushes? SHARED
ABOUT FAMILY MEMBERS NOT BRUSHING GOOD, EATING GOOD.
Gave out treats and they enjoyed. The teeth with apple and peanut butter. Checked about
allergies first. After ate marshmallow off treat saying all my teeth are gone
Kids were cooperative, excited, wanting to share stories. Lasted about 40 min.
Handed out brochure for teacher to give to folder they bring home to parents. Explain to
kids they can go over it with their parents and also have coloring of teeth for them and
will able to remind them about what they learned
