This opaque white matte glaze verges

on being grayish blue. It breaks black on
ridges, and is great to accentuate texture
and facets.
Its sensitive to thickness and temperature:
completely matte when fired at cone 9,
and has a more satin finish at cone 10, with
a light crackle surface. Thickness gives a
whiter look and tends to go black if applied
too thin. I use a thick mixture, brush it on,
and fire it in the hot spots of my electric kiln
at cone 910.
I discovered this glaze in the book, Oriental
Glazes, by Michael Bailey. It is recommended for once-firing, but Ive always used it on
bisqued pieces.

high-fire

Caterina Roma HAA2

This glaze is a bit shinier than HAA2. It can

be fired over a broader temperature range,
but it can be a bit runny if fired over cone
10. It breaks brown on edges and gives
better results when thin. I use it for dipping
in a thin mixture but, with care, it can be
also brushed on.
The interaction with the impurities found
in the clay I collect gives a rough finish.
When I want a white satin glaze, I use a
combination of the HAA2 and Oatmeal
White glazes in different coats, which
results in a deep and interesting surface.
This glaze is also useful when refiring with
HAA2, to lower the melting temperature.

White where thick; red where thin. Best with
early reduction and a long, concluding period
of oxidation, or an oxidation soak during cooling. Yields a very soft and fat surface with
crawling. Crawls more strongly if fired soon
after glazing.
