How is poverty and money an issue within the novel?

Who is Aunt Alexandra and how do the other characters perceive her?

How does the congregation react when Calpurnia brings Scout and Jem to
their church?

Every student will be able to: demonstrate their understanding on the poverty
present in the novel, Alexandras character and how others react to her, and the
racial interaction during the church scene.
I can: create a budget that will allow my family to survive, create a character map
that demonstrates Aunt Alexandra as a character, and discuss the racial tension
present in the church.

After we watch the video, ask how this relates to the church scene in
chapter 12? How do you feel about the reactions in this video? How did
you feel about the reactions in chapter 12? What would you do in these
situations?

- 3 minutes; Reading Quiz


- 15 minutes; Anticipatory set: Described above.
- 15 minutes; Discussion: Discuss chapter 12 with the students. See
topics and questions under discussion questions tab.
-20 minutes; Activity on chapter 12: One of the big issues in this
chapter was raising enough money for Tom Robinson. The students will
get into groups of four. They will be handed fake money. They will also

have a sheet of paper for their family. The paper will have the bill
amounts for rent, food, electrictiy, water, clothes, and extras. They
wont have enough money for all of these things so they must pick and
choose. They will then share what they are spending their earnings on
and why. We will then discuss how this shows the poverty that the
African Americans in the novel face, and why its hard for them to give
an extra dime.
-15 minutes; Discussion: Discuss chapter 13 with the students. See
topics and questions under discussion questions tab.
- 20 minutes; Chapter 13 Activity; Aunt Alexandra character Map. This
will show the importance of her character
- 2 minutes; closure activity, described bellow.

Closure
Those actions or statements by a teacher
that are designed to bring a lesson
presentation to an appropriate conclusion.
Used to help students bring things
together in their own minds, to make
sense out of what has just been taught.
Any Questions? No. OK, lets move on is
not closure. Closure is used:
To cue students to the fact that
they have arrived at an important
point in the lesson or the end of a
lesson.
To help organize student learning
To help form a coherent picture and to
consolidate.

Assessment
How will you know if students met the

what you were looking for in each
assessment.

Have two students share their character maps, and state how her
character is perceived by the family.

- Discussion: This will show that the students can make inferences and
inquiries about the text. This will also show their ability to listen to their
peers and provide feedback.
- Reading Quiz: This will show that the student did their assigned
reading and know the basic plot events.
