Who can vote?

Voting allows citizens, or members of the community, to have their voices heard
in a large government. Tomorrow, November 4, 2014 is Election Day for North
Carolina. We will be electing a US Senator, a US Representative, a State Senator, a
State Representative, and many local town positions.
In the past, some Americans werent allowed to vote because they werent
considered to be important citizens or knowledgeable about the government.
Today to vote, you have to be 18 years old and a citizen of the United States.
Should we put limits on who can vote in our class based on age?

What if we change? Does our government change too?

Sometimes after writing a large document like the Constitution, we discover that
we may have forgotten to mention something important, or we discover that we
no longer agree with what we decided. North Carolina had 3 different versions of
their Constitution in 1766, 1868, and 1971. We continue to amend, or change, the
version from 1971 today.
When should we be able to revise our Constitution? Should we call attention

to it just when we see that it is not meeting our needs as a class? Every
couple months? Every year? You decide and explain WHY you decided
what you did.

Our Executive Power

While the Constitution tells us as citizens our rights and responsibilities, it also
outlines the duties and responsibilities of our leaders. At the national level, our
executive power is our President. At the state level, our executive power is our
Governor. The executive power is in charge of enforcing laws and protecting all
citizens.
In our classroom, Ms. Jennessee is our executive power.

outlines the duties and responsibilities of our representatives. At the state level,
we are represented by 50 senators from around the state and 120
representatives. These senators and representatives represent citizens in all
counties and all over North Carolina.
