Business
Monetary Policy vs. Fiscal Policy
Presentations/Advance Organizers Quick Plan
Section I
1. Instructional Method: I would use this method when introducing content that has ideas which
are often confused. In other words Id use it to help students compare and contrast topics.
2. Topic and Rationale: I would teach fiscal and monetary policy using this method because the
two are often confused. I could also teach the hierarchy of some companies (C-level execs,
department directors, managers, etc.). I could teach students the different departments that
many companies have (accounting, finance, marketing, HR, etc.).
3. Features and Purposes: One purpose of this method is to provide students with a visual
representation of the information being presented. The use of graphs or visual graphics can help
students understand a process that they werent able to grasp from simply reading or taking
notes.
4. Advantages and Disadvantages: One advantage of this method is that it gives students more
than one way to look at a topic. In a presentation I can put pictures, diagrams, and even videos.
Graphic organizers can help students organize their thoughts in a way they couldnt do in their
head. This can aid them in the compare/contrast process. It can also help them visualize how to
categorize certain information.
I wouldnt say there are a whole lot of disadvantages, but there are some things that could make
this method difficult. This method is highly structured, so it requires active collaboration
between the teacher and learner. I dont consider this a bad thing, but anybody who has tried to
collaborate with any other person knows, that it is complex and not always easy. Another thing
to consider is that many textbooks do not feature conceptually organized material. This means
that teachers, who are already plenty busy, must organize the material themselves.
Section II
1. Learning Objective:
a. Content: SWBAT compare and contrast monetary and fiscal policy by completing an
activity in which they utilize a graphic organizer.
b. Literacy/Numeracy: SWBAT write clearly to appeal to multiple audiences by writing
a reflection in which they describe in their own words what monetary and fiscal
policy are.
c. Democracy: SWBAT work collaboratively for a common purpose by working on their
graphic organizer with a partner for the purpose of gaining experience collaborating
to complete a task.
2. Materials Used:
a. Blank graphic organizers for each student
b. Pencil and paper for writing reflections

3. Model of Teaching and Why It Was Chosen:

a. Presentation/Advance Organizer
b. I chose this model because I recently taught this lesson but did not incorporate
graphic organizers. The lesson still went very well because there was an engaging
activity, but I do believe graphic organizers would have helped more students
organize their ideas.
4. Key Terms:
a. Monetary policy, fiscal policy, graphic organizer, Federal Reserve, Federal Open
Market Committee, Board of Governors, money supply, taxes, interest rate
5. Background Knowledge:
a. Students will need to have basic understanding of cause and effect situations.
b. Students will need to have basic understanding of the U.S. government and some of
the factors that affect the economy.
6. Assessment:
a. Students will work with a partner to complete their graphic organizers. Students will
use a compare/contrast matrix to list attributes of both monetary and fiscal policy. I
will collect their graphic organizers for assessment. Also, students will complete a
group activity in which they analyze quotes that pertain to either fiscal or monetary
policy. They will then determine which type of policy the quote is referring to.
