STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM (LIGHTING)

A primary function of the faculty room is to provide a private space for professors which will
enable them to do their tasks efficiently. It is one of the most important spaces of a university which also
has a lot of factors to be considered and understood for it to be comfortable for the users.
One of the important things to be considered in designing a faculty room is its lighting. As of its
design now, the space is not in need of much change since its lighting is properly addressed and
adequate for its function.
From the waiting area, the coffered type of lighting is used, which is both pleasant to the eye
and also manages to keep the room with just enough brightness for its users.
As for the faculty itself, natural lighting is utilized since most of the space is given enough light
provided by the windows which allows the natural light to pass through the room. Having no partitions
for the professors tables also enables the light to be distributed throughout the space, making it energy
efficient.
Attention should be paid to the maintenance of the lighting system. If bulbs burn out frequently
and are not replaced the system wont work as required. Therefore, all other things being equal,
fluorescent lights are generally preferable to incandescents because they last longer. In any case, bulbs
should be easily accessible for replacement when they do burn out. The design of the ceiling lighting
should recognize the need to regularly change bulbs. Bulb changing is often difficult in a facility that may
be heavily used and that may require special equipment to reach the ceilings, though this does not
particularly apply for the faculty design, so lighting designs should attempt to ensure a long lifetime of
the bulbs.
This space may also find LED lights useful, though purchase is a bit expensive, the operational
cost is much less expensive than any other lighting system. The following sentences are some reason
why Led should be considered: Long life time stands out as the number one benefit of LED lights. LED
bulbs and diodes have an outstanding operational life time expectation of up to 100.000 hours. This is
11 years of continuous operation, or 22 years of 50% operation. If you leave on the LED fixture for 8h
per day it would take around 20 years before youd have to replace the LED bulb. LEDs are different to
standard lighting: They dont really burn out and stop working like a standard light, moreover the
lighting diodes emit lower output levels over a very long period of time and become less bright.
Because the long life span of LED lights, also the maintenance work - think of all the work and
energy it would take to purchase, stock and change the conventional light bulbs of an airport - youll see
that you can make significant energy savings also when it comes to maintenance and replacement due
to the long operational life times of LED lighting. Especially for a room such as the faculty, lights are used
from morning to night, thus making it less in need of maintenance and energy efficient will surely be a
big help for the institute.
LEDs are extremely durable and built with sturdy components that are highly rugged and can
withstand even the roughest conditions.

Because LED lights are resistant to shock, vibrations and external impacts, they make great outdoor
lighting systems for rough conditions and exposure to weather, wind, rain or even external vandalism,
traffic related public exposure and construction or manufacturing sites.
LED is designed to focus its light and can be directed to a specific location without the use of an
external reflector, achieving a higher application efficiency than conventional lighting. Well-designed
LED illumination systems are able to deliver light more efficiently to the desired location.
In accordance to these problems and upon study, our group has come up with options in making
the room, particularly the faculty room, more energy efficient yet still providing adequate lighting for
the specified spaces involved with appropriate function not only for the professors, but also for other
goers of the room. Along with this, we also came up with less expensive lighting systems that will still be
able to accommodate the said solutions without hampering the efficient results.
