Abstract

The topic of Illustration is an interesting one because it reveals the use of creating images in our
society to express certain concepts, ideas, and tells a story about certain topics or issues. The
purpose for researching illustration is to give the reader an in depth understanding of the visual
interpretation and presentation of everyday products, ideas or issues used on an intended
audience. That intended audience being the consumers of our society, average citizens in a
society going about their own ways. I intend to reveal to my reader but also myself an interest in
the world of illustration, why it is an important and fundamental resource in our society, and how
exactly the people behind scenes of illustration present these ideas and concepts to us, the
general masses of todays world.

Illustration is as the University of Arts in Philadelphia describes it in their illustration
program, a unique way to define its art form by content and not medium. Its circle of
influence encompasses popular media. With the use of image-making it has the ability to
materialize in our world concepts and stories. No matter what method, be it by hand or by
digital technology. I found this source useful because it interprets Illustration in such a
way that includes the purpose and use in many formats.

This source is something I believe to be greatly useful because of its own focus on how
illustration effects people, but also puts into perspective the use and importance of
illustration in society and individuals. A small passage from the book points out the
growth of illustration as part of Americas important art forms. Its ability to impact a vast
audience, its impact on an economic level. With numerous ways to influence individuals
and society as a whole I feel this source is credible and beneficial.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Jonathan Woodward gives a detailed and simplified depiction of how and which
strategies, techniques, and resources go into the field of illustration. In terms of marketing
Jonathan points out to the reader that marketing skills are essential if a person wishes to
make a career in illustration. Its a vital tool necessary to secure continuing work. He then
goes on to list marketing strategies such as who are the intended clients? What business
identity does the illustrator want to create? As well as networking and knowing who
knows you. I feel this source is valuable to my essay because it breaks down question 3.
