Domain: Operations and Algebraic Thinking:

Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.

(a) 2. Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole
numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using
objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown
number to represent the problem.
Add and subtract within 20.
(2) 6. Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and
subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten
(e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading
to a ten (e.g., 13 4 = 13 3 1 = 10 1 = 9); using the relationship
between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one
knows 12 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums
(e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1
= 13).
Work with addition and subtraction equations.
(a) 7. Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if
equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. For
example, which of the following equations are true and which are
false? 6 = 6, 7 = 8 1, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5, 4 + 1 = 5 + 2.

Learning goal/ Essential Questions

I want students to be able to visualize the representation of subtractions and
also be able to write the equation format. They will understand a total and
the partners in math subtractions. Much easier for all students to see rather
than doing a paper and pencil method. Using both methods while I teach will
be useful for both ELL and non-ELLs

Background Information
All students including ELL students will need to know how to do, addition, count to
twenty, be able to subtract and understand what subtract means, and understand
what a total and partners are. Numbers are universal and if translation is needed, I
will have translated number in students language.

Invitation to learn/ Focus Task

BALLOONS!!!! Everyone loves balloons and when you mention the balloons to a first
grader they will want to pop the balloons and will want to do something that is not
from the textbook. I will have the balloon all filled up and ready to go in the corner
of the classroom and the students will be curious as to why the balloons are at the
corner of the classroom. I f ii want to be a students culture into the classroom we
can do piatas or something that has to do with the students culture and that can
work with subtractions.
Instruction Procedures
We will do some basic math equations from the subtractions portions of the lesson
and have them written down on the white board they have at their own desk. I will
tell them for example, What is 12-6=? and I will do a couple of problems like this
with the whole classroom. After we do those equations I will ask for volunteers to
do balloon subtractions. I will have a total and a partner for the equation. Example
was I asked for 12 students and each of them had one balloon. The students that
were not holding a balloon gave me a number to subtract from 12, that number
subtracted will represent the number of balloons I will pop, so 12-6, I pop 6 balloons
and I ask them how many balloons are we left.
Adaptations for different students need
Students that are struggling WILL have to participate so they can at least get the
visual of how subtraction will look like instead of looking at it from a hand written
point of view, same with ELL students they will understand the basic of subtracting
and that I am taking away from a total number and I will have translated words or
sentence if needed of what will be done. If a gifted student is present I can make it
challenging by making the total number higher than 20 and subtracting by a double
digit. With Ell Students they will work with other ELL students that might be higher
level thinkers and work as a team. Everything will be visual so all the students
should be able to understand what a subtraction equation means and how to
preform one.
Assessment
I will do an assessment by reviewing after the balloon activity with all students
including ELL students and I will be writing down subtraction equations on the
board and having them solve them. During the pre-intro of the balloon, I had some
students who struggled and counting down. After the balloon I let them know that

we will be counting down like a rocket ship that wants to blast off and that was
more relatable. Students were able to understand subtraction much better and a
little bit faster after the balloon activity, but I still had some that would struggle.
Technology in the classroom
I am sure that there are similar websites that did what I did with the
classroom and can be used for all the students. They can build a PowerPoint or
something similar and work out an equation by using pictures and presenting it to
the classroom.
