10.2 Applied Exercise
With continuously rising caseloads, is case attrition a problem or simply a fact of life? Do you believe
that case attrition demonstrates the fact prosecutors have too much power?
I think that case attrition is a problem, however it is also a fact of life. Large caseloads are so frequent
and the worst of the worst simply have to be weeded out in order to prosecute what are deemed as
most important. I do not think that it really demonstrates that the prosecutors have too much power.
There are two choices, hire more prosecutors and allocate funds (taxes) to pay them or make the choice
to prosecute the more serious offenders. Prosecutors should, through their work knowledge, past
conviction history, and education, be able to sort out which cases should be taken immediately.
