Sandwich Town Tidal Defences

Welcome to our latest newsletter which provides an
update on our progress on the Sandwich Town Tidal
Defence scheme.
The 21.7 million flood defence scheme involves
works on 16 individual reaches of the river and will
reduce the risk of tidal flooding to 488 homes and
94 commercial properties in Sandwich.
A map of the reaches and the timescales of the
works can be found overleaf.
Update
In October we started our steel sheet piling works at
the entrance of Gazen Salts car park. Work is
progressing well; so far we have installed piles
along a 170 metre section of the river using a Giken
Rig. We have also constructed a new flood wall in
the car park.

Footpath restrictions
In October we started our embankment works, at
Reach 6 (Vigo Sluice to Black Sluice). Again the
recent wet weather and ground conditions have
caused us to postpone the works. Our contractors
are monitoring the conditions and will start
construction again when they improve.
Unfortunately, the temporary footpath closure will
need to continue until further notice.
As mentioned in our previous newsletter we also
have a temporary footpath restriction from
Richborough Road to Goshall Railway (Reach 1)
until April 2015. If you have any queries regarding
these restrictions please contact us using the details
below.
Quay Opening Ceremony
As many of you know, on Friday 19 September we
held a Quay Opening Ceremony at Sandwich Quay
to mark the completion of our tidal defence work in
the town centre. The day was a huge success and
we would like to say thank you for your continuous
support throughout the scheme.

Reach 4 Pile installation

At Discovery Park, we are raising the existing

defences by constructing a new flood wall inside the
existing brick wall. The new flood wall is complete
and brickwork is progressing well.
We have started installing erosion protection to the
river bank, north of Richborough Road. Our works
will also involve embankment raising, creating a
flood wall and raising the existing access track.
Due to the recent wet weather and ground
conditions we have altered our planned schedule of
works near the Princes Golf Course, Monks Wall
Nature Reserve and behind Highway Marine Boat
Yard. Our works will recommence in the spring
once ground conditions improve.
We have completed the new defences east of
Richborough Road, Sandwich Marina, Stonar Lake,
Sandwich Quay, Gallows Field and the east side of
Gazen Salts recreation ground.

We will be holding another public drop in session in
the New Year so that people can find out more
about the details of the works and we will publicise
more details about this shortly.
Thank you and Merry Christmas
We would like to thank you for your patience and
co-operation while we carry out our works. We wish
you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
