Research Outline Rough Draft
High school, the best four years of my life is coming to a close. With my cap and gown already
ordered, its clicked in that graduation day is coming very quickly. Now, I need to figure out what schools
I am able to attend and career paths I hope to pursue. After high school, I hope to attend Indiana State
University to pursue Criminology and Fire Science.
Indiana State University was established in 1865. Indiana State is ranked 30th among all national
universities, 1st in community service by students, and 3rd in learning service. Indiana State offers 100+
majors including notably aviation, education, business, criminology, finance, insurance and risk
management, athletic training and pathology was nationally recognized ("Indiana State University.
Indiana").
Residential life at Indiana State University offers a living and learning environment, committed
to the academic success and personal growth of our residents. Students can choose to live on an
academic theme housing floor. That means everyone on their floor would have the same major so
students could have easy study groups and make new friends ("Living."). Indiana State does have a
housing policy unlike some colleges. It states that a freshman with 32 credit hours or less, must live on
campus unless their parents home is within 60 miles of the university or have a valid exception
("Indiana State University: Residential.").

My first career path would be to study Criminology. ISU offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Criminology and Criminal Justice. The requirements to get a job in the
criminal justice system are fairly basic. You must pass a written, physical, and physiological exam. You
must also pass an oral interview. It would be very beneficial if you had a bachelors degree in
criminology but it is not required. Some classes to earn your degree would include Introduction to
Criminology, Introduction to Law Enforcement, Introduction to the Court Systems, and Ethics in Criminal
Justice (Criminology.").
The national yearly median salary for an everyday patrol policeman is $59,000. The minimum is
$37,000 and the absolute maximum with benefits is $91,000 per year ("Salary."). Some benefits of
becoming a policeman include excellent dental and medical coverage, potential 4 day work weeks, 80180 hours of paid vacation annually, holiday bonus pay, and you can legally carry a gun almost anywhere
you go (Police.").
My second career path would be to become a firefighter. The basic skills required to become a
fireman are almost identical to those of a policeman. You must pass a written, physical, and
physiological exam. Also, you must take an oral interview and pass with a top 20 score of all who apply.
If you make it this far, the 5 skills needed to have is prevention, self-protection, rescue, safe guarding
property, and fire control ("Skills.").
The average firefighter in the country makes $57,000. Some benefits include medical and dental
insurance for themselves as well as their families. They also get multiple week vacations and sick-leave
days ("What."). Some personal benefits include gaining the trust of your co-workers on down time due
to the intense job. Physiologically, it is very tough on firemen on saving lives and seeing people at their
worst. This helps them through the job.

As high school is coming to a close, these are a few of the many things I think I would love to
pursue for my future careers in the next few years. My current dream and goal is to study Criminology
and Fire Science while attending Indiana State University.
