ThomasPainesCommonSensewaswritteninthesummerof1776,beforeAmerica
wenttowarwithGreatBritain.Thetimeandoccasionsurroundingthisarticlearebothofgreat
importance,sinceCommonSensewasultimatelywrittentopersuadeAmericanstofightfor
theirindependence.InCommonSense,Painedemonstratesakeenunderstandingofhis
audiencewhenhespeakshighlyofAmericaandberatesGreatBritan,whileusingvividimagery.
Itisimportanttonotetheintroductionindetail,asthisistheparagraphPaineusesto
hookhisaudience.Fromthebeginning,Painestartswithaconcession,admittingthathemaynot
beabletopersuadehisreaders,inwaytoshowhumility.Painestateshowever,thatifreason
doesnotcreatemoreconverts,thentimewill.Bydoingthis,Paineuseslogostobolsterhis

believesthosewhodonotsharehisphilosophyontheinitiationofbattleareunreasonable,even
statingthattheyarecaughtinatumult,howeverheknowsthathecannotfullycontrolthem.

ofhisaudience,theeverangrycolonists.Paineusesimagerytopaintanimageofreconciliation
beingmerelyadream.HestatesthatreconciliationisnolongeranoptionandthatAmericanscan
